Previous comment was by me. I dug a little bit. Charles Gould in "Mythical Monsters" says the legend is Japanese and points to the Japanese encyclopedia Kashiragaki zōho kinmō zui (頭書増補訓蒙圖彙大成): available online here: http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015068488694;view=1up;seq=239 . Under the link you can find Kai-tsi (獬豸, kaichi, same characters as xiezhi), which is given another name Sin-you (神羊, shin'yō), which means "divine sheep". Kai-tsi and xiezhi are the same animal, only in different languages.--Nathan2000 (talk) 17:07, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
