If Hardoon died in 1931, how did he help Jewish refugees in 1938? (76.10.182.29 (talk) 17:46, 20 February 2009 (UTC))[reply]
I think what the original author of this wiki article meant (without clearly sourcing material) was that Silas was an important figure that (along with Victor Sassoon) helped form the Shanghai Jewish community so that as Jewish refugees from Europe fled to China, they were joining an existing community. The article should be expanded to explain all this, but the sources are very sparse and not all available online.
Some additional "sources" for material I could locate are as follows:
German, Jew, Muslim, Gay: The Life and Times of Hugo Marcus by Marc David Baer contains an endnote (no. 171 to chapter 3) that says, “For another idiosyncratic Jewish character whose life provides insight into larger historiographical issues, see Stein, ‘Protected Persons?’” Following up the full details of this article as shown in the bibliography produced the following result: Sarah Abrevaya Stein, “Protected Persons? The Baghdadi Jewish Diaspora, the British State, and the Persistence of Empire”, The American Historical Review, Volume 116, Issue 1, February 2011, pages 80–108. [1] This shows that “another idiosyncratic Jewish character” is Hardoon.
