I remember seeing this production in Los Angeles. The show was plagued with so many problems. When I saw it, Udana Powers was substituting for Lesley Ann Warren, who was frequently ill, and Udana Powers' understudy was playing Melanie. It was a Saturday matinee and Udana Powers was using a script onstage. I remember admiring Udana Powers for going ahead with the role, and at the end of one scene, she left her script out in the open and she and Pernell Roberts covered it up by doing some business where they both went back to retrieve it in character....

I remember the music was pleasant enough, and the show was still rather long. I think a live horse was used for the burning of Atlanta scene. One of the critics who reviewed the show made a comment about the horse not being ready on Opening night, and going to the bathroom onstage. The reviewer commented that he had the same reaction to the production as the horse did.
