Poorly Written History Section[edit]

The standard of the English in the 'history' section is a long way below expected standards on Wikipedia. UEFA 5 star stadium?[edit]

A new renovation has almost been finished at the moment. This renovation of the east stand has increased the capacity to 80,000 and has made the stadium totally covered.
After this renovation (2005) the stadium will receive a 5-star rating of the UEFA which will make the stadium suitable for any European Cup Final in the future.

Is it possible that the five-star list is out of date? I was there on Saturday and the renovation would seem to have been finished, and it is fully covered. The Spanish wikipedia seems to think it has been five stars since the end of 2003. -- Blorg 14:09, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've searched the web for various references regarding this stadium being a UEFA 5 star stadium. So far I've found nothing except for various bulletin board postins claiming that this stadium is indeed a 5 star stadium. There is not a shred of evidence of this being the case and I think it would be wise to remove this 5 star rating until some proof on the matter is found. Niall123

It's not true that bernabeu is the only stadium which has hosted all major football events. also the Munich Olympic Stadium has done so, and still exists though Bayern Munich is now using the newly built Allianz Arena. 1974 World Cup Final 1988 European Championship Final 1977,1993,1997 Champions League Final

Bernabéu pronounced as Berna-BOW[edit]

Why do most footballers, pundits, managers, commentators and fans here in England pronounce the stadium name as "The Berna-bow"? How do people even come to the conclusion that it would be pronounced like that? How does ..beu equate to being pronounced as "bow", as we would for Bilbao? Does it sound cooler or something? It just makes them all look ignorant and stupid. I find it really embarrassing that they can't even pronouce names properly from a country as near to us as Spain (there are other exmaples like Tenerife for instance). I've even heard David Beckham pronounce it that way and he plays for Real Madrid!!!

The Guardian's "man in spain" Sid Lowe pronounces it "Berna-bow", and he's fluent in Spanish. He even worked as a translator for Beckham, so perhaps Becks picked it up from him. That said, it is incorrect, he himself says

"The thing about Spanish is that every vowel gets pronounced (except in certain combinations where they can sound like they are are running together - 'ua' can sound like 'wa', especially after a 'g', for exmple).

"So, the E and the U at the end there are both heard. And the vowel sounds are pretty much as they are in English, just shorter (a = ah, e = eh (NOT ee), i =ee, o = oh, u = oo)."

"The other thing is that the E has an accent on it which doesn't change the sound but makes it the letter that is stressed. So it's Bernabéu.

To put that in a pronounciation - Bernabayoo is basically right, but as the vowel sounds are a bit shorter, I'd prefer: Berna-bEh-oo (without that oooh being elongated)."

But it's not like this is the only foreign word pronounced differently in English.

Proposed move of article to Estadio Santiago Bernabéu[edit]

Yes you're right. And since you're asking for this, I'd like to add that Bernabeu is a Catalonian surname that doesn't need an accent. Snark Removal[edit]

Article currently says "The first official match of the Spanish national team in the Santiago Bernabeu was played in the year 1964 (Franco-Stalin)." Record attendance[edit]

What's the source for the claim that 128,000 attended a 1974 match between Real Madrid and Dynamo Zagreb? I'm not seeing that cited anywhere else and I can definitely confirm that Real Madrid did not play Dynamo Zagreb in European competition that year. (A friendly is possible, I suppose, but that 128,000 would show for a friendly against a team from Yugoslavia, doesn't smell right to this lifelong European soccer fan.) 1957 European Cup Final

Main article: 1957 European Cup Final

It was contested between Real Madrid, the champions of Spain and Fiorentina, champions of Italy. In this season 16 teams played for conquest the trophy, Real Madrid won 2-0 in the final after goals from Alfredo Di Stéfano and Francisco Gento in the second half. Was the second consecutive European Cup for Real Madrid after having won his first trophy one year before, in the Parc des Princes against Stade de Reims.

1969 European Cup Final

Main article: 1969 European Cup Final

This year Ac Milan champions of Italy, play against AFC Ajax champions of the Dutch championship, play to determine who would be the champions of Europe. Milan defeated Ajax 4-1 getting his second European championship, Ajax had already made history, being the first Dutch team to reach a final.

1980 European Cup Final

In this final they faced the English Nottingham Forest, current champion of Europe, against Hamburger SV champion of Germany. The match ended with a victory for the English team with a 1-0 result. The new champions of Europe retained the trophy and achiaved his historic second European Cup consecutively.

2010: Champions League Final

Main article: 2010 UEFA Champions League Final

A game played between two best teams in Champion's League which consists of group stage and knock-out stage. The Final is played at a different stadium each year. In 2010, FC Bayern Munich, who knocked out Olympique Lyonnais in the semi finals, The German team played against Internazionale who beat FC Barcelona in the semi-finals.
