The little I know about Sandymount High School comes from my time there - is there anybody who can confirm or deny the claims made by the poster in the following link:

While I know the geography is correct and that Sandymount High is older than Marian College, the posting is short on details:

Who was the priest who railed against the school for a decade?
Who owned the land that Marian College was later built on?
Where can I find a detailed (with references to sources) source of information on the politics of the Catholic Church, other churches and education in 20th Century Ireland?

Update on alleged controversy[edit]

According to the entry on Marian College Dublin, their property was in the grounds of Riverside House - the Irish Times Digital Archive has an article on July 2, 1952 entitled Consent to use house as school witheld. A Mrs. Julia Lloyd, of Riverside, Herbert Road, Dublin and John Burke, solicitor, took an action against the then Earl of Pembroke and his son Lord Sidney Charles Herbert of Dalsford, Iver, Buckinghamshire. Mrs. Lloyd and her solicitor were acting as personal representatives of a previous Mrs. Lloyd, who holds a leasehold interest in said house. The plaintiffs argued that the Earl of Pembroke and Lord Herbert had unreasonably withheld consent for the use of the house as a school and religious institution. The case had begun the previous day, was adjourned until July 2 and was being heard before Mr. Justice Dixon in the High Court. If nothing else, this puts some names and dates into the historical record. It doesn't seem to address opposition to Sandymount High School, but it does provide details from a paper of record. Another update[edit]

This page gives a bit more information about Riverside House and who lived in it - it's a family genealogy page rather than a paper of record, but it looks like it might have been Tim Lloyd (or possibly Finbar Lloyd) as the landowner who refused to sell the land and school to the Church.
