Samir Handanović → Samir Handanovič Jasmin Handanović → Jasmin Handanovič – The native Slovenian name of the two footballers is Handanovič, not Handanović. Handanovič is Slovenianized version of Bosniak Handanović. However, since both footballers are Slovenian citizens, the native name Handanovič should be used. Overlooked move request[edit]

I noticed that this page has been moved from Handanović to Handanovič. – I am requesting a page move for a bunch of Slovenian footballers because their family names have been Slovenianized for whatever reason (I suspect nationalism from certain users), even though those footballers use the names in the fashion as those proposed in this move. I do not know which articles have been moved in the past, but I see that in the case of the Handanović brothers the move was successful, though it seems that at the time of the request only the opinion of Sofeshue was taken into account.
Even though the letter Ć is not part of the Slovenian alphabet it is still used. The same thing applies for other "foreign" letters such as Ä, Ö, Ü etc. One good example is Danilo Türk who was the President of Slovenia between 2007 and 2012 and his name was used as such in official documents and in the media.
All players mentioned in the move are or were part of the Slovenia national football team and use/d the letter ć on their national team jerseys:

Then cautious Support - okay, thank you User:Ratipok, based on the example you gave of Danilo Türk, and the case-by-case evidence and explanation, it seems most in accord with WP:BLP and normal complications of BLP names in this region to assume as default that each of these moves is correct in using the ethnic minority Serbian/Bosnian diacritic rather than the Slovenian diacritic. However someone please ping me here if there is a case of one of these bios deliberately using Slovenian diacritic where the option not to do so exists. Actually the mentioned players are ethnic Bosniaks and Serbs, members of the Bosniak and Serbian minority in Slovenia. They were either born abroad and moved to Slovenia or were born in Slovenia to immigrant parents. Also, I am not saying that the spelling is a bad thing, but I am saying that the spelling is wrong. For most of the mentioned players the spelling was correct and was then changed based on the opinion of one person, without consensus. And that kind of spelling couldn't be wrong since its used in everyday life across the country. I can provide countless of sources from the media regarding the mentioned players, with the media using the letter ć. I think I showed that foreign letters can be used on the basis of the former President of Slovenia, who's last name was Türk. PS: wont even bother of answering the IP user, since he obviously missed tons of wiki debates about diacritics. Ratipok (talk) 17:33, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, numerous RMs have upheld the principle of native-language diacritics, especially BLPs. This excludes, of course, cases an English name is more appropriate, such as if Samir here were most notable from a English-language rapping career as "Sammy Handy." But as such, "Samir Handanovic" isn't an English name; it's essentially just an error. --BDD (talk) 23:30, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It varies upon different sources. For the mentioned players some use ć and the others č (I am referring to the Slovenian media). For example: here is a news of Samir Handanović becoming a father - RTV Slovenia uses the letter ć [12] and Siol uses č [13]. Here we have Siol news about Handanović spelled with ć [14][15][16]. At the end of the day its up to the journalists who writes the article, though I am sure that ć prevails and is used more often (again I am talking for the Slovenian media and for the mentioned players - that is, persons from Slovenia but not ethnic Slovenes). In any case, this simply means that ć is applicable in Slovenia and not wrong, as it was insinuated during the first requested move, which was successful, but only based on one opinion. However, all the mentioned players currently use the letter ć on the back of their national team jerseys and clubs (see sources above) and how those are spelled depends on the will and wishes of the players. Two of the mentioned players are currently members of Slovenian football clubs and both of those clubs also use the letter ć (see sources for Jasmin Handanović and Radosavljević above).Ratipok (talk) 00:07, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

  • Do we need the Bosnian IPA?
  • "During the 2010–11 Serie A season he saved a total of six penalty kicks, equalling an all-time league record set in the 1948–49 season", this seems an odd thing to list in only the second sentence. Possibly could be included further down in the lead.
  • There is no real summary of his club career here, it needs at least one paragraph detailing major achievements in his club career and where he's played etc.
  • "played for them at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.", no need for the ref after this, it's adequately sourced within the article.
  • "He has gone on to earn 81 caps for his country", as he's now retired, this should be changed to past tense.
  • "Regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation", this statements needs better sourcing. It currently has an 8th place finish in a annual award and the Daily Mail which, per WP:DAILYMAIL, is not considered a reliable source.

Early career[edit]

  • Only a single sentence for his time in Slovenia, with no mention of the loan spell at Zagorje,  could do with expanding on this area further.
  • His transfer fee to Udinese is mentioned in the ref provided, I'd include that.
  • Ref 8 takes me to a newsfeed rather than any specific page so it doesn't support the two sentences it's used with here.
  • Second paragraph is a bit muddled, starts with him joining Treviso, then Lazio, then his sending off for Treviso and then back to his appearances for Lazio. The sentence below about his single Lazio appearance could be incorporated into this paragraph also.
  • Last sentence of the second paragraph is unsourced.
  • "Thanks also to his saves, Rimini remained undefeated in both championship games played against Juventus. The club finished fifth in the Serie B and conceded the fourth least number of goals in the league.", source?
  • "In June 2017, despite Rimini excised the option, Udinese also excised the option by paying Rimini €250,00 in net.", this sentence doesn't make sense.

Return to Udinese[edit]

  • The first part of this sentence is just repeating the last section above isn't it?
  • Could do with expanding perhaps, there's a big jump from 2007 to 2009.

2009–10 season[edit]

  • "which were priceless for Udinese", personal opinion that is not supported by the ref.

2010–11 season[edit]

  • Do we know who's penalty saves record he equalled?

Internazionale[edit]

  • The first sentence here is very long. Could do with breaking up more. Try to avoid using references mid sentence also.

2012–13 season[edit]

  • His transfer occured at the start of this season so that could be merged into this section.
  • Both legs of the Hadjuk tie are given the same date?
  • Second half of the second paragraph is unsourced.
  • "On 19 June 2013 Inter acquired Handanović outright, and sold Faraoni to Udinese for undisclosed fees", try to avoid leaving single sentences on their own. Could be worked into a paragraph somewhere.

2013–14 season[edit]

  • "in Mazzarri's first match in charge", explain who Mazzarri is and link to his article.
  • Last sentence of the third paragraph is unsourced.
  • "in Javier Zanetti's last competitive match at San Siro", is that relevant to Handanovic?

2014–15 season[edit]

  • Unlink Milan and Derby della Madonnina, per WP:OVERLINK. Both are linked in the previous section.

2015-16[edit]

  • "Handanović made perhaps his worst appearance", personal opinion not supported by the ref.
  • Unlink Atalanta and UEFA Europa League, linked previously in the article.
  • "by European media", that's a very broad term and needs to be narrowed down.

2017–18 season[edit]

  • Unlink Juventus and Lazio, both previously linked.
  • Last sentence is unsourced.

  • Is there any potential expansion on his Slovakia youth levels? Even a brief mention of representation at various youth levels could be included.

  • Last paragraph is largely unsourced.

  • Per WP:ALLCAPS, ref titles should not be displayed in all capitals even if the ref uses them. This applies to refs 4, 14, 15, 17, 24, 32, 45, 50, 61, 68, 74, 84, 87, 89, 90, 93, 94 and 96.
  • Is sporting.heroes.net a reliable source? This ref would be very easy to replace so I would find a better source.
  • Refs 8, 10, 13, 25, 26, 60, 75, and 80 are dead or expired so the information can't be verified. They need rescuing or replacing.
  • Refs 29, 34, 65, and 74 need an author.
  • Is footballlineups.com a reliable source?
  • A few uses of the Daily Mail as a source need to be replaced, per WP:DAILYMAIL.
  • Use the full name of RSSSF.com, The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation.
  • Some refs use the author= field while others use the last=, first= fields for authors. Stick to one style for consistency.

Unfortunately, I'm failing this article as there is too much to be reasonably fixed within a GA review. As well as the issues listed above, the article needs a good copyedit to address grammar issues. Orphaned references in Samir Handanović[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Samir Handanović's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Last name[edit]

Is clearly spelled "Handanović" in all major Slovenian media (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), so stop changing to "Handanovič", the only reason why Football Association of Slovenia uses this on its website is the fact that "ć" is not a letter in Slovene alhpabet and is therefore irrelevant, even on his national team shirt it was spelled "Handanović".
