Sourcing[edit]

So far as I can tell, sourcing on the Samba effect is lacking. Google produced only two news articles, from Jan and Feb 1999 (aka near the end of the 1997 Asian economic crisis and the very beginning of the Samba effect):

Both of these use different statistics and provide slightly contradictory information to that which is used in the article and the sole source it cites: http://actrav.itcilo.org/library/english/05_Globalization/unfair/bearing_the_burden.pdf (most of the cited info comes from pg 12). I opted to go with the information provided by this source because it comes from a date after the Samba effect had occurred (April 2000), is from an academic journal, and is also consistent with the information provided on the Economic history of Brazil article here. In case the cited source becomes unavailable in the future (the link from the 2007 version of the page was dead and I had to find another, I assume this will happen again given time), I can confirm the text I created was not WP:COPYPASTE or WP:PLAGIARISM. In case an online copy of this journal becomes completely unavailable in the future, the full information (all that was provided in the pdf of the journal) for citation is as follows.
