Semi-protected edit request on 5 March 2024[edit]

Hi, there is a spelling mistake calling "Rising Pune Supergiants" as "Supergiant". Would like to fix that. Hurricane Huracan (talk) 15:18, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: "Rising Pune Supergiant" is correct spelling. VK wiki100 07:21, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rename the title[edit]

Now that it's officially announced, I think the title should be changed to 'Royal Challengers Bengaluru' Cric editor (talk) 14:55, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 20 March 2024[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: No consensus. There is a large number of !vote supporting for a move, however, most of these are grounded in the fact that there is an official name change. There are also some among these participants providing some evidence on the updated usage in recent news articles. However, as pointed out in the !oppose side, just because the name is officially changed, does not mean that the article title should be updated immediately. Additionally, per WP:NAMECHANGE, there is a need for an extensive evaluation of the sources to support the argument of the change based on common usage, not just among the major news publishers, but widespread among many English language sources. As the name change is barely shy of a month at the point of this closure, it is WP:TOOSOON, as indicated in one of the !oppose comments.

The discussion would have been closed as 'Not moved', but given the active participation of the subject in the sport, there is a possibility that the updated name may stick in a subsequent discussion. Therefore, a 'No consensus' closure (in part to allow for an unbiased close of a future discussion).

Note on those who brought up Bangalore/Bangaluru as a city name in their comments: these comments, in part or whole, are disregarded as we are to be focused on the subject here: the sports team, not the city.

Note to those who seek to open a new RM discussion, it is the norm to open a move discussion for WP:NAMECHANGE at least three-six months after the official change of the name. This is to give time for the numerous sources (beyond the major news sites) to coalesce around the new name, thereby making the new name a common name among the majority of the sources. – robertsky (talk) 09:31, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Challengers BangaloreRoyal Challengers Bengaluru – The franchise has been renamed, page should be moved. Kiilvish (talk) 13:50, 20 March 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. – robertsky (talk) 16:58, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support: They officially changed the name to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. - The9Man (Talk) 17:31, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose sources haven't started using the term Bengaluru yet, as they only re-branded yesterday, and so this doesn't meet the threshold of WP:NAMECHANGES (as English language sources haven't had a chance to decide whether they'll predominantly use Bengaluru or not). Wikipedia follows WP:COMMONNAME and not WP:OFFICIALNAME. Also, considering we have the article Bangalore not Bengaluru (and this has not been moved despite 13 move requests), it seems premature to assume that the common name for this team will be Bengaluru. Any support votes on this RM need to demonstrate why it's the common name, rather than just asserting support based on an official name change. Joseph2302 (talk) 17:45, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All these sources have been updated and they use the name Bangaluru now. 𝓥𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷24𝓑𝓲𝓸 (ᴛᴀʟᴋ) 02:26, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes these have all changed it to Bengaluru, but it's way too soon to know whether that will become the common name for most English sources. That will need a least a few months to become clear, and therefore I believe that changing it now is premature and not in line with the advice of WP:NAMECHANGES. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:49, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Indian Premier League website is obviously not an independent source. — BarrelProof (talk) 02:50, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: Name change has been officially announced by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It will be fair to move this page under new name. Sachin126 (talk) 05:37, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: This an official name change, Wiki article can be renamed accordingly.
    Anish Viswa 06:38, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: I agree with Joseph2302; many sources still use 'Bangalore,' and also the article Bangalore has not been moved yet, so I think it's too early to change the name. VK wiki100 13:00, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A city name and a privately owned entity name are two entirely different things. That argument does not carry much weight. - The9Man (Talk) 15:15, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Whereas every support vote so far is based on it being the new official name, which doesn't make it the common name, which is what's needed to move an article on Wikipedia. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:49, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@The9Man: Yeah, I agree that the city and a privately owned entity are different, but I was trying to say that the name should only be changed when it's quite commonly used in reliable sources. Perhaps that's the reason why the Bangalore article's name hasn't changed. VK wiki100 17:14, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: I agree with the name change of the team. The name would definitely be common over the time. There is a long-due discussion about moving the article Bangalore to Bengaluru. The name change was done over a decade ago, today Bengaluru became common with most of the media uses it. The name Bengaluru have got the popularity in the pop-culture scene over the time.Jayanthkumar123 (talk) 16:32, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • SUPPORT: Most major English-language sources have already begun referring to the team as "Royal Challengers Bengaluru".

There's already a Move discussion in process above; No point in creating a new section. 𝓥𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷24𝓑𝓲𝓸 (ᴛᴀʟᴋ) 12:14, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As this was clearly meant for the move discussion above, I have removed the section header, and thus converted into a vote. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:17, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support When team name changes officially, every valuable portal will use the official name, thus per definition the WP:COMMONNAME will be fulfilled. But common name is usually not subject of teams. When Punjab Kings changed the name, or Delhi Capitals got the new name, some still referred them as Kings XI Punjab or Delhi Daredevils, but common name also changed. Here we have some difficulty, as the city name is still used widely as Bangalore (which is a different discussion, Mumbai or Kolkata managed better the name change). Nevertheless, the WP rule does not care much about widely usage: the WP:NAMECHANGES rule is that if independent reliable sources use the new name, name change has to be submitted. And here this applies, all sources mentioned above use the new name, and the sources which have been cited as oppose examples, now also use the new name. I can't imagine any reliable source which would go against the official name, and it is something which will happen in the near future, it already happened. vampeare (talk) 21:38, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Follow WP:NAMECHANGES. It does not say to use the latest official name or to predict what we think will happen in the future, or even to look to see if we can find some sources that use the most recent official name. It says to see what is most common in English-language independent reliable sources – to look at what they are currently using. It does care about wide usage. It cares about what is most common in current independent reliable sources that are written in English. Wikipedia is supposed to lag behind the rest of the world, not to be a leader of a movement. — BarrelProof (talk) 02:56, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per The9Man's reply to other user. Even though Bangalore is more common than Bengaluru, the fact that this article's title is the OFFICIAL NAME of the franchise, it should be renamed. RPC7778 (talk) 09:43, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The rivalry with the Chennai super kings does not stem from the water dispute whatsoever, and is mainly related to the Kohli-Dhoni dynamic and also the two being from neighbouring states.Water has no role in this RockRida317 (talk) 12:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Funnyfarmofdoom (talk to me) 15:32, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

hyperbole[edit]

In the "Rivalries" section it says "In the second time they faced each other, Ross Taylor scored a blitzkrieg 81* off 33 balls..." blitzkrieg? really? How is that blitzkrieg with the wiki article defining it as "is a word used to describe a combined arms surprise attack using a rapid, overwhelming force concentration that may consist of armored and motorized or mechanized infantry formations; together with artillery, air assault, and close air support; with intent to break through the opponent's lines of defense, dislocate the defenders, unbalance the enemies by making it difficult to respond to the continuously changing front, and defeat them in a decisive Vernichtungsschlacht: a battle of annihilation" Please can someone change this? 86.185.18.60 (talk) 17:29, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
