Birthplace[edit]

(Pinging 14GTR (talk · contribs)). There seems to be confusion over his birthplace. The article says Hastings. The book source is a book I cannot access. The Tate source says "Harting, Hampshire". The NPG source says "Harting, Sussex". this guide to the Pear Tree Press collection says Harting, Sussex. There's a typo somewhere! Do you know which is right? I've checked my copy of Francis Spalding's book and it clearly states 'Born Hastings, Sussex' for Guthrie but as you say the Tate and NPG sources do say Harting. I'm happy to accept a change to Harting based on that. There is one other potential source - David Buckman[1] - but I don't have access to that at the moment and it will be a few weeks before I could visit a library that holds a copy. When I do, I'll add a note here as to what it says. Hope that's OK.14GTR (talk) 11:30, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@14GTR:That's v helpful, thanks. I'm inclined to believe the book since the websites may well have made the typo, but we'll see what that other book says. (I'm very happy that there are still reasons to visit an actual library to look at an actual book!) Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 07:49, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately Buckman's volume is rather expensive - about £180 new for the two volume set - so not many libraries do hold a copy but I will check in due course. I'll check the ODNB at the same time.14GTR (talk) 10:20, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I checked the Buckman book today and that also says Harting so I'll change the article now.14GTR (talk) 21:38, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
