Taxonomy[edit]

The statement: "Recent research has placed Rio Grande leopard frogs in the subgenus Scurrilirana.[2][4]" is biased and not commonly accepted. This taxon was proposed in invalid fashion, as a ranked subgenus nested within three other subgenera. Use of this subgenus also results in multiple and superfluous subgenera being applied to the small number of species included in the master heading of "Leopard Frog". Reliance on these references also constitutes an institutional bias, as it excludes references which reflect considerable subsequent disagreement and discussion.
