Suggestive Doggerel[edit]

He famously composed rather suggestive doggerel about Ella Wheeler Wilcox as lyrics to the opening bars of Alexandre Luigini's Ballet égyptien. I think that's pushing it a bit far. Was it famous? Not really. Were the words suggestive doggerel? Well, insofar as I've been able to determine they were not suggestive about her or anyone else. Seems to me like a nonsense lyric, about a fictitious "Ella Wheeler Winterbottom". It alludes to her indirectly. But yes, he did write silly words to the aforementioned tune.
