History Section[edit]

  • Some proposed changes

Information to be added or removed:

Suggest editing the third paragraph of the "History" section from this:

Gimbel, who started as a warehouse man, succeeded Neilan in 1957 as president of the company, a year after its name was changed to Reliance Steel & Aluminum Company. Under Gimbel, Reliance began its long-running territorial expansion, naming a resident sales agent in Phoenix in 1958. Two years later, Reliance acquired a small Phoenix-based competitor, the Effron Steel Company. With the purchase of another competitor, the Westates Steel Company, in Santa Clara, Reliance Steel expanded into Northern California in 1961.

To this:

In 1957, Neilan stepped down from president and was succeeded by William T. Gimbel, his nephew. Gimbel, who started as a warehouse worker, returned the company name to Reliance Steel & Aluminum Company and began its long-running territorial expansion, first naming a resident sales agent in Phoenix in 1958.

Explanation of issue:

This is a pretty simple rearrangement of the information presented to help communicate it more concisely. I suggest cutting the last two sentences on further acquisitions, because the information is not relevant from an encyclopedic perspective.

  Unable to implement

  • This type of information about appointments of company presidents is usually a simple, approvable edit, with the company itself being allowed to be used as the reference. However, the link that you've provided for this claim does not state any of the information you are requesting to add. The claim's particulars — including such anecdotes as Gimbel starting as a warehouse worker, changing the company name, beginning territorial expansion and naming a resident sales agent in Phoenix — are nowhere to be found in the reference you've provided. To implement this edit request, please provide a reference which verifies all of the claim's elements.

plus Additional changes made:

  1. Unreferenced information was omitted. In the future, if information of this type is to be added, it needs to have accompanying references which verify the information.
  2. The list of brand names was pared down to list a random selection of brands only (in A to Z alphabetical order, omitting duplicate letters). Wikipedia is not to be a random collection of listed company information without accompanying context, per WP:NOTADIRECTORY.
  3. The external links section was reduced to the main company's website.
  4. The Advert maintenance template dated September 2011 was removed.

Hi there! Thank you for your response. I appreciate the other changes as well. However, I want to dispute your claim that my source did not reference my information. Unfortunately, the website link I posted is a slideshow of the company's history, and I'm unable to provide a direct URL. If you navigate to Our History > 1950s, it does provide information on the name change and on Gimbel's history.

That said, please add this paragraph to the History section:

In 1956, the company renamed itself to Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co to reflect its inclusion of new product lines. The following year, Neilan stepped down from president and was succeeded by William T. Gimbel, his nephew, who began as a warehouse worker.

Reliance makes its first acquisition in 1952: Carthage Steel Strip, in South Gate, California. The addition of precision cutting equipment, at the time a very new technology, greatly expands business capabilities.
I did look at that location you specified. In the box above there is the text from your edit request on the left and the text from the source on the right. As you can see the text doesn't match.  Spintendo  17:18, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Information to be added or removed: In 2007, Reliance was named to Fortune magazine’s list of top 500 companies for the first time. As of 2018, Reliance has remained in the Fortune 500 for 12 consecutive years.[1]

Explanation of issue: This provides modern-day relevance and background on the company's status as a Fortune 500 Company.
