Monarchy[edit]

@Srnec Principality of Capua is in Category:Former monarchies of Europe and Category:Former principalities, a child of Category:Former monarchies by type. Why are you reverting my categorisation of princes of Capua as "monarchs in Europe"? Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 23:16, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For the same reason I reverted them when Marcocapelle did them: they pop up in my watchlist and I do not agree that these are 'monarchs'. I do not see that label as an improvement. As a rule, I don't care much about categories. I care mostly when they are misleading. Unfortunately, the people who care most about categories seem to value the category tree in and of itself. Thus, we get Category:French troubadours, although the defining characteristic of the troubadours is that they did not write in French. I tried to fix that and got shot down because, you see, in the context of our categories, "French" means "of France". What reader will know that? Srnec (talk) 23:57, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This main article shows that they are 'monarchs'. Are you going to contradict the main article?
Category:French troubadours is a grandchild of Category:People of medieval France, I don't see the problem. But if you think this is important, you could always propose it to be renamed to Category:Troubadours from medieval France; I would support you if you did. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 00:54, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I did that. It was opposed by all. And nominating multiple categories is a pain. Srnec (talk) 02:10, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow! :/ I'm sorry to read that, because I really agree with you. Would it still make sense to create Category:Occitan-language troubadours? I think it would. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 07:01, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec If you'd like to create Category:Occitan-language troubadours, I would support you. And thank you for your explanations here, I'm glad we reached agreement. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 09:25, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alternately, we could also just move all princes of Capua from the "Rulers in Europe by century" categories to the Category:Princes in Europe. It is the "rulers" part which I object to; I don't necessarily need them to be "monarchs' instead. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 01:04, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would not object. My objection is to the grandiose-sounding word 'monarch'. There is a reason I get zero and one hit respectively at GScholar and GBooks for 'monarch of Capua'—and that one hit isn't relevant. I'm not sure what main article you are referring to. Srnec (talk) 02:10, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, and agree. Then that's what we probably should do. (The main article I'm referring to is Principality of Capua). Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 07:03, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've put Category:Princes of Capua, Category:Princes of Benevento and Category:Princes of Salerno in the Category:Princes in Europe. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 07:10, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What should we do with Bagsecg? He is currently categorised as Category:Danish monarchs, Category:Monarchs killed in action and the infobox says "King (probably from Denmark)". Are they all incorrect? Then we should get rid of all of them. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 07:15, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Srnec? Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 18:36, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I self-reverted on Bagsecg. Srnec (talk) 01:01, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. :) Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 09:23, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
