Pronunciation[edit]

Original name[edit]

I think something should be added to explain to outsiders the unusual pronunciation of the name. 146.87.65.10 08:32, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have an article on Richard Coates who the present primary and secondary school are named after, who in his will dated 1719 paid 70£ per anum for a school for boys and girls in "Pont island". I have a photo of a page on this gentleman probably written by Murial Sabo which states the writing is on a slab in St Mary's church in Ponteland,"Here lieth the body of Mr Richard Coates who died Jan. 3d :1719: Having left his whole estate of or about 70 l Pr Anm, for the use of a charity school in this parish". The 70 L was the original abbreviation for £, which was an "L" for libra, and Pr anm is per annum.

I'd attach a copy of the photo but don't see how to do that.Avi8tor (talk) 13:21, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
