From Gideon Longs blog http://forums.gideontech.com 'Pity Me is one of several English place names which testify to the influence of French, imported to Britain after the Norman invasion of 1066.

The village was thought to have been sited on a small lake, and took its name from Petit Mere, the French for Little Sea.'

... remember, the district was controlled by the bishops of durham who used norman french.

This is much more plausible than the 'pithead mere' thing because the name appears to pre-date mine pumps and, probably minimg itself in this district 82.38.112.68 09:07, 29 June 2007 (UTC)mikeL[reply]

I was told that during the Napoleonic Wars there was a prisoner of war camp here and that the French prisoners called the pond le petit mer. Is there any evidence that the settlement predates the late 1700s? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.13.170.129 (talk) 11:42, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
