Origins of his wife[edit]

The notion that Pietro II's wife Maria was a scion of the Candiano family appears, to the best of my knowledge, only in the highly romantic and unscholarly The Dogaresses of Venice, by Edgcumbe Staley, 1845, a book which is cited as an authority far too frequently in Wikipedia's articles about the doges of Venice. The much longer and more detailed article about Pietro II Orseolo in the Italian-language version of Wikipedia names her only as "Maria" and says nothing about her being a daughter of Vitale Candiano or any other Candiano. pnh (talk) 10:46, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
