The Name & Penrith[edit]
The name suggests an original something like *Pennon Riganijon "Hill of the Queens" which wouldn't give Penrith. Names like Carlisle and Derwent suggest a habit in Cumbric of shortening -ijo- to -jo-; although this isn't definite (nothing in studying Cumbric is) which would suggest we should be looking for somewhere without the -ydd ending.
