Biography[edit]

This biography is somewhat cursory and random at present: e.g., no textual mention of King Lear! I propose to add a little more substance.

~I have added much material and excised a few irrelevancies. I removed the mention of the RSC poll from the Trivia section, where it was described inaccurately, and added an accurate allusion to it in the main text.

Other stage productions[edit]

there should, at least, be some mention of the peter hall production of 'the government inspector' in 1966; a runaway hit at the aldwych theatre, london, and the stratford performances of 'timon of athens' directed by the late john schlesinger (1966 season). both productions were impressive. i will come back later with more input. bruce 86.194.182.229 (talk) 13:52, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford?[edit]

I don't have a Kingsley Amis biography to hand. However, the episode is not mentioned in the Motion biography of Larkin. I wonder just how famous it is. Did he really study at Oxford at all? There was no mention in the obituaries in The Independent, The Times, The New York Times, or The Telegraph and it wasn't mentioned in his Who's Who entry.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 14:14, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]


5/24/09-I have a copy of Zachary Leader's "Life of Kingsley Amis" and at no point does it mention Scofield rooming with Amis and Larkin. The first sentence of chapter 5, however, says that "Amis went up to Oxford in late April 1941," which would have made it difficult for him to have roomed with Scofield in 1939. I think the word "famously" in the Wikipedia write-up may be an indication that the author is having a laugh at us. Or is the Scofield/Amis/Larkin appearance at Oxford an early example of the "Elvis sighting" phenomenon? PS: Scofield's two biographers, Gerry O'Connor and J.C. Trewin do not mention his Oxford career, nor for that matter does Scofield in his biographical essay for Lillian Ross's book, "The Player."

Varndean[edit]

I was a class mate of Paul's from 1933 -38. He did not do well in the Schools Cert exams (GCSEs) in July 1938 and left to haunt the Stage Door of the Theatre Royal in Brighton - he had done so since he started acting (firstly as Juliet) in 1934 (Varndean was a Shakespeare school). He eventually became Asst Stage Manager (i.e. 'dogsbody') at the Theatre Royal. He could not have gone to Oxford - Varndean was, in fact, in the Cambridge collection, but he did NOT go to university. Thanks for this; I have been unable to source this independently. It is all over Google, however, even without Wikipedia matches. I need to check the book itself. Certainly Amis & Larkin were the same age as Scofield, and certainly Amis & Larkin were at Oxford together. I've also seen a reference to Scofield starting at Croydon Rep. in 1939, so it seems open. I will leave it in for the time being (it's hardly critical), until I can check the Oxford alumni site. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 17:02, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On Google I can only find two obituaries, here and here. They could well just be copying Wikipedia - the wording is almost identical. A biography of him should give us the answer next time somebody is near a good library.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 12:41, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No photo of Paul Scofield? The one you show is not of Scofield.[edit]

How is it, one might ask, that the great actor Paul Scofield's page on Wikipedia contains only one photo that purports to be of him, but in fact, is of an impersonator? clicking on the link of the photo reveals this: "The British actor Paul Scofield (1922-2008) portrayed by Allan Warren at the photographer's studio in London, England."
