Redirect or disamibig[edit]

This article was originally about the holiest day in Eastern Christianity. In 2004, it was turned into a redirect to Easter because the content had been merged there. Yesterday, a new user made a bold edit, and changed the longstanding redirect to passover. The edit summary for that edit was While it is true that some Christian denominations call Easter "Pascha" in English, the word does actually means (and is usually translated) Passover and should re-direct there. I reverted that bold edit to restore the longstanding redirect, with an edit summary of from a simple google search, this word means "Easter" much more commonly than it means "passover". What I meant by that is simply that google is a good indicator of how frequent a word is used. Redirect pages are simply there to let users searching for a term find the article on the topic. At the time, it seemed to me that it was much more likely that users search for the word "Pascha" were looking for the article Easter. Anyway, the new user restored the redirect to passover with an edit summary: Google is not an authority, but a search engine. Pascha actually means Passover and not Easter. We should work with facts and not a census of misunderstandings. Wikipedia is not here to tell people what words actually mean (and looking at a few online dictionaries, both "easter" and "passover" are listed as definitions for this term). I still believe that users are much more likely to be looking for the article on Easter when they search for this term, but I have tried to come up with a compromise to account for the new user's concerns. Therefore, I have turned the redirect into a disambiguation page thereby having links to multiple articles. This way, no matter what the intention of the user searching for the term "Pascha", they should not be able to find the appropriate article. -Andrew c ^[talk] 22:56, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no issue with any of the points you have raised regarding Passover and/or Easter.

What concerns me more is the presence of the brothel and the composer, under the guise of "Topics referred to by the same term."

Yes, one could argue that every "Pascha" in the list is in fact the same term, since they are all spelled using the exact same set of ASCII characters in the very same order.

And yet, something about that argument and the presence of said outliers in the list strikes me as compellingly counterintuitive.

Be that as it may, if this handling is not unique to "Pascha", but is pervasive on Wikipedia, then I would probably have to concede that my objection is moot. Toddcs (talk) 23:32, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
