There is no such thing as a "Dresden doll". Dresden was a cultural and economic center in Saxony, but no porcelain was produced there. However there were 100's of porcelain painting shops in Dresden between 1855 and 1944 that defined a rather over blown Rococo decorating style that typifies what is referred to as the Dresden style. This style is associated with the blue crown stamp first registered by Richard Klemm, Donath & Co., Oswald Lorenz, and Adolph Hamann in 1883. In addition the porcelain products of the Meissen company were often sold in Dresden, though not made there, and as a result Meissen china and figurines, characterized by the blue cross-swords stamp, were often mistakenly referred to as "Dresden."

Move to Parian doll[edit]

The term "Parian doll" is the current term for this type of doll - as Bells has pointed out above, Dresden doll is an archaic name and is not used by modern collectors. (there are many such archaic terms such as "Queen Anne doll" to mean any 18th century wooden doll or "Mad Alice" to refer to a wax-over composition early 1800s doll.) For example, Googling "Parian doll" has MUCH more immediate hits about this type of doll, whereas Googling "Dresden doll" doesn't. The article quoted in the references is a very antiquated/outmoded article which sounds like it was written in the 1950s or 1960s - doll scholarship has moved on vastly since then. I suggest that the main text of the article be moved to "Parian doll" as more reflective/representative of current terminology, but am posting here before doing so so anyone who may have objections can chip in. Hehe, I just posted on Bellsonherfingers's talk page that it should be moved to Parian doll. Just be bold and go for it, I doubt there would be any objections as reliable sources seem to support it, but if any objections crop up later it can always be moved back.
