Untitled[edit]

Regardless of Wikipedia shortcomings, this article covers a unique element of mid-twentieth century technology. This stage of technological advancement represents (it seems to me) a threshold, the dawn of a time that might be labeled "hi-tech". Up to 1950 mechanics was largely straightforward and not very automatic (eg, most cars had standard H-pattern three-speed manual transmissions and were rear-wheel drive) and electronics was anchored to the vacuum tube. In the decade of the fifties the vacuum tube gave way to the transistor and we arrived at the dawn of the space age. New cars had power steering and brakes and automatic transmissions and the computer controlled, fuel injected front-wheel drive was waiting in the wings.
