If built, it would be the largest optical telescope ever constructed. It has been claimed that OWL would have a greater mirror surface area than that of all previous professional telescopes combined.

Really? I'm pretty sure that's entirely wrong. As it's been needing a citation for about 3 months I'm removing it.Larryisgood (talk) 19:26, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia[edit]

I just stumbled over a funny TRIVIA on [1]:

"If budgetary considerations will force the final OWL to be smaller than 100-m, it may eventually mean Originally Was Larger ..."

Shall we add it in a ==Trivia== section? Greetings, --Zeptomoon 21:15, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia sections are discouraged these days.

One comment about the article - the fact that the OWL passed over in favour of the 42m E-ELT is mentioned twice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.170.148.145 (talk) 04:01, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure who prepared the section that lists a limiting magnitude of 38, but this is absurd -- the limiting magnitude of a ground-based telescope is set primarily by airglow and seeing, thus Hubble still has a greater selectivity and magnitude limit than the largest current ground-based telescopes despite its vastly smaller size. What a larger telescope *can* do is collect enormously larger quantities of photons for spectroscopy: something which is simply not possible with a smaller telescope. The current emphasis for many large ground-based telescopes also is a move of instrumentation and core science to the near infrared: despite a loss of theoretical limiting resolution it is much easier to do adaptive optics at these wavelengths at present. 24.92.252.0 (talk) 21:22, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Owl2.jpg[edit]

Image:Owl2.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Obvious Question[edit]

What precisely is it going to be overwhelming? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.71.6.167 (talk) 00:09, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hopefully any investigation into the opportunity cost. <snark> But seriously, is it going to help us find threatening meteors and comets? Chrisrus (talk) 06:33, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Its cost succeeded in overwhelming the European Southern Observatory organization. Insightfullysaid (talk) 21:11, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OR[edit]

"Also, there appears to be some inconsistency as to the actual construction costs of the OWL, with some estimating its cost an order of magnitude higher (EELT currently at €1.3 billion,[6] equivalent to around $1.6 billion, scaled using D^2.77 proportionality assuming a 100 meter diameter yields $21 billion).[7]" - this seems to be original research, since the source doesn't mention the OWL at all. The author just did some math himself. --2003:6:6134:3563:606F:2600:2A24:ACCD (talk) 22:22, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
