Proposal: Rename to Outline of the Ottoman Empire[edit]

I propose that the article be renamed to Outline of the Ottoman Empire.

Indexes on Wikipedia are alphabetical topic lists. Therefore, the title of this implies that it is an alphabetical index, which can be misleading, as the reader gets something other than what he was expecting. There are about 500 "Outline of" articles, on many major subjects, so this one on the Ottoman Empire will be in good company.

Keep: Being the creator of the page I don’t see much difference between the two topics. However outlines are usually texts with links. In indexes, only the links are listed. In the Index of Ottoman Empire-related topics except for the short introductory paragraph only the links are listed which makes the article more index-like. So I think it should be kept as it is. Outlines are of two basic types: sentence outlines, and topic outlines. Topic outlines typically have just links. Meanwhile, virtually all of the indexes on Wikipedia are alphabetical. The Transhumanist 02:13, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- But this one is not an index page, it is an outline that's bunched together. If someone wants to make an additional alphabetical index, that's fine. But this page has been made into an outline, and the page history should reflect that. List instead of a paragraph[edit]

I appreciate efforts to change the style of the article by placing the links in a list instead of a paragraph. But is it necessary ? In most "list of articles of ..." and "outline of ... " the links are presented in paragraphs and I don’t see why the change is made here. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 13:01, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Outlines should be in hierarchical bullet-points. This article did not match either outlines or indexes style, but was closer to an outline; so I formatted it that way. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the topic to break it down any further. We can use columns if there are too many items per heading (Wikipedia:OUTLINES#Outline_format). While an outline usually starts as a topic outline (just bullet-point links), it is natural for it to become sentence outline (links plus short description).

"In most "list of articles of ..." and "outline of ... " the links are presented in paragraphs" is not accurate. Since this is an outline, looking at some of pages in Category:Outlines, I counted 60 uses of bullet-points, 6 uses of paragraphs, and 5 uses I was not sure how to classify (navboxes, tables, etc.). Quick explanation of Wikipedia outlines[edit]

"Outline" is short for "hierarchical outline". There are two types of outlines: sentence outlines (like those you made in school to plan a paper), and topic outlines (like the topical synopses that professors hand out at the beginning of a college course). Outlines on Wikipedia are primarily topic outlines that serve 2 main purposes: they provide taxonomical classification of subjects showing what topics belong to a subject and how they are related to each other (via their placement in the tree structure), and as subject-based tables of contents linked to topics in the encyclopedia.
