Quote[edit]

"Indeed, there have been only a few reliable records of the bird since the 1880s, with the last authenticated report dating from 1990, when a roadkill specimen was discovered by scientists returning from an expedition in a remote part of Queensland." Where is this taken from? I want to quote it 146.176.60.68 12:17, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's a good account of the roadkill specimen in The Ghost with Trembling Wings by Scott Weidensaul, pages 75-81. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.16.89.57 (talk) 12:12, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New sighting[edit]

Keep an eye on this fella. Apparently a recent sighting of live Night Parrots in the Pilbara has been confirmed. No official news yet, I've only heard a rumour. But I've no doubt it'll appear in relevant publications soon enough. Gemfyre 12:38, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Night Parrot sighting - CONFIRMED[edit]

The latest edition of W.A. Bird Notes (Number 123, September 2007) has a small article by Rob Davis - chairperson of Birds W.A. and the person who saw these parrots. This sighting has been confirmed by the Birds Australia Rarities Committee. I am mostly wiki-illiterate so I don't know how to properly reference this, but if somebody can put in a correct reference for it please do so. Gemfyre 04:39, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

the night parrot was thought to be extinct —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.192.78.33 (talk) 07:06, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Updated reference - quick and dirty - for an even newer new photo and video confirming sighting!

New sighting in WA[edit]

Status extinct?[edit]

In "Conservation Status" we have Estimates range from extinct to not threatened at all. Does any authority still list it as "extinct"? Molinari (talk) 17:18, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Molinari: Prompted by this, I made an edit here. Not what you asked about exactly, and what any other refs say about the status is worth noting too. — cygnis insignis 17:21, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural significance?[edit]

During a short report of a new sighting on BBC Radio 3 in the UK this morning, it was mentioned that this species is "sacred to Australian Aborigines" (or words to that effect). Are there any written reliable sources available from which to add information about this to the article? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.196} 94.0.129.189 (talk) 07:19, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've never heard anything but agree would be good to add if we found a source. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:46, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

note on type species?[edit]

This article is too advanced to have me plonking in a ref from 1951, as I have elsewhere, so in case I don't find a more recent citation I'll leave this here.

Serventy's Handbook of WA birds (2nd ed.) has a couple of notes on William Ayshford Sanford and Robert Austin (explorer), the Austin Expedition of 1854, and the collection that "was apparently the type specimen" of the night parrot. — cygnis insignis 17:36, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
