Birth countries

There is a question on the main page of what to list for birth countries. Ccwaters believes it should be whatever the country was called at time of birth (ie: USSR), and states that the NHL media guide lists them thusly. I don't have a copy of the media guide(s), but nhl.com and nhlpa.com, as well as the NYrangers.com official website lists current country names (ie: Russia, Lithuania, etc.). A random selection of 5 other official team websites also lists current country names, not deprecated ones. For the Olympics, the Czech republic and Slovakia (formerly Czechoslovakia) have different teams, as do some former Soviet republics, so I would think current names would be more useful. Hall of famers

Shouldn't Wayne Gretzky be in Hall of Famers section ? He stands in the Hall of Fame, isn't he ? Lvr 11:23, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps, but Gretzky spent only three of his 20 seasons with the Rangers. Also, he's in the Hall as an Oiler.

"Class" has nothing to do with it. The criteria for citation as a HOFer on the team pages has to do with whether, over the course of several seasons, a HOFer was a major impact player for his club. Having led the Rangers in scoring each season he played for them and winning a major trophy one year, it's tough to argue otherwise. Ravenswing 08:00, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

We'll have to agree to disagree. If Gretz had come over and pulled what Jagr did elsewhere ie: "I'm dying over here (on a bad team)", I'm not sure that Rangers fans would want to remember him as a Ranger, regardless of scoring. --jsum 20:47, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

I hope you can agree, however, that whether a player was popular or not in any given city doesn't have a lot to do with whether he was a genuine impact player for the club; if that was the case, a great many more goons would be Hall of Famers. Regardless as to whether Ranger fans like Jagr, he is near-certain to become a Hall of Famer, and if he puts in a few more starring seasons for the Rangers, he'll qualify for listing here. I just removed Lafleur from the list. He was already inducted into the Hall of Fame when he became a Ranger and only played here one season. Also, as per the WikiProject Ice Hockey/Team pages format page, Hall of Famer players must have played several seasons for the team in question, and those seasons have a material impact on their selection as Hall of Famers. Because Guy was inducted in 1988, before he came out of retirement, his time with the Rangers had zero impact on his selection. Yankees76 22:51, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Actually, in the NHL, you do not go in for a team, you represent all teams you have played for. The NHL has never said anything about teams regarding the hall of fame. A player represents all teams they have played for. Also, retiring Gretzkys number all league round, even though he didnt play for every team, kind of makes exceptions to all rules. List of New York Rangers players

I have started a List of New York Rangers players to compliment the one in the categories section. So when you add new players the the New York Rangers main article, could you also add the same players to the list of Rangers players? Thanks! Masterhatch 8 August 2005

I have now gone and spread it to all the original six teams. The reason I did it was, as Ccwaters mentioned, the new current rosters are going to be spread around and I thought it would look strange to have a lot of white "nothing" under the nice table. I have not, and probably will not, spread it to the other teams as generally their lists aren't too long and don't really need to be divided in half as such. Masterhatch 16:20, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

Rangers captain?

Hey Ravenswing, have your heard wether or not the Rangers will be nameing a new captain soon? Or are the Rangers gonna stay with 3 alternate captains (Jagr ,Kasparaitis & Rucchin).

Just a nitpick, should the Captainless Rangers, have their alternate captains (Jagr, Kasparaitis & Rucchin), on the Captains List? The Devils & Bruins don't have theirs, (they just have "no captain"). GoodDay 21:59, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

I think it's OK to keep them on there, since any of the three could be a captain for us. Also, they will likely finish the season without a captain anyway. It would be more difficult if letters were rotated among more than just 3 players... --jsum 19:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

The NHL's practice when a team fails to name a captain is to put "No captain" down in the record, which is how the Rangers will be listed if they fail to name an official captain before season's end. Groups of alternate captains are not listed. Ravenswing 00:15, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

An alternate captains list (for every Nhl team article), interesting. I'd suppose such a list, would take longer to create (at least twice as many player names, compared to captains list), and more difficult to backup (Nhl websites don't list their Past & Current alternate captains). Possible addition: cap info

Does anyone have accurate cap info for the rangers i was gunna add it then realized i dont know where to find the info. If anyone has this it would be a good addition just to put the total cap amount (39 mil) and the total rangers cap number. This could be added to all the team pages if anyone finds it Caleb rosenberg

Correction made

Changed the '94 Game 7 NYR-NJ tying goal to Valeri Zelepukin--it had been listed as Claude Lemieux. VZ is listed as the scorer in the official book of the '94 playoffs and my tape of the game confirms.

Long Article

This article is a little long, I want to create two new articles called History of the New York Rangers and Notable Players of the New York Rangers. Then I'm going to leave a little comment in each section with a see main article note. For instance if you look at the Water Polo page for an example of what I am planning on doing. This will allow the history and notable players sections to grow a bit without congesting the main page. Outside Center 17:00, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm late chiming in on this. Way late, actually. But I think it needs to be said ... cutting the whole darn history out and putting it elsewhere seems too extreme. Look at the precedent set by FA sports team articles such as the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears. While they do indeed have separate articles which go into a more rich and detailed recounting of team history, they also don't have just a single paragraph on the team before diving right into the statistical and roster aspects of the team's page.

I'd like to see some sort of happy medium here between moving the whole team history, and having it all here. Resident Lune 14:04, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

I think a lot of the history should be moved back to the team page beacuse there are not such strict restrictions on length anymore, and most other team pages in all sports have their whole history on the main page. Bmitchelf 20:10, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Country Flags

So you're gonna change Darius Kasparaitis to something different from his player page, and meanwhile leave Sandis Ozolinsh as Latvia when he was born in the U.S.S.R.? They were not born in Russia so why should they have the Russian flag next to their names? Bmitchelf 20:09, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Kasparitis played for Team Russia, that's why. Nationality/allegiance is not always based on birthplace. (For example, Steve Nash was born in South Africa to British parents but is considered a Canadian.) -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 02:25, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

He just "chose" to play for Russia. His nationality was originally U.S.S.R., but should now be Lithuania based on birthplace. Technically, his nationality could be American, too, because he is a naturalized citizen. Thanks for the answer, but I'm really looking for a response from ccwaters here. Actually, ccwaters contacted me about this too. It's just that "nationality" on these NHL articles is usually based on international play. That's what I'm basing it on, since it seems to make sense the most (and is not as messy). Because Alex Mogilny would fall in that category too (Russian but has US citizenship). Bmitchelf: there is a difference between a state and nation. We note the state in "Places of Birth" and in the bylines of individual articles. We use the political state that existed at the time of birth, that is why everyone is "U.S.S.R." or "Czechoslovakia" and will be for a few more draft classes. Those are recognizable and agreed upon political entities ( http://www.un.org/Overview/growth.htm ). We use flags to represent nationality. Nations, however, are a subjective matter. They represent cultural identity. As noted before, this has been discussed somewhere at WP:HOCKEY (B-H might be able to find it) and it was decided that international competition was the first deciding factor. Ozolinsh plays for Team Latvia. Kasparaitis plays for Team Russia Danius Zubrus plays for Team Lithuania.

Like I said its a subjective matter and we recognized that we needed to agree upon a guideline. You are welcome to disagree with it, but I ask you to look at the situation as whole. Please bring up any further discussion at WP:HOCKEY. ccwaters 13:30, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Hall-of-Famers

Are all of these really necessary? Some of them, Guy Lafleur for instance, only played one season with the Rangers and were not really associated with them as such. It just takes away from the accomplishments of the others, in my opinion. Bmitchelf 03:27, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

This article, frankly, sucks.

A section on "infamous" trades (what, the Rangers never made a good deal?)? A so-called "history" section that, as does the trades section, completely ignores the first seventy years of Rangers' history? This is garbage; the Rangers deserve better than this. I believe the trades section was added very recently and shouldn't be there. The history was moved into its own article to cut down on size for this one, but frankly, all of the other hockey teams are oversize and have their team history on the page. Not necessarily. An outline of history in the main article is still useful, but it needs to be an outline of the eighty year history of the franchise ... not the moral equivalent of "So, dude, the Rangers won the Cup in 1994, and, oh, yeah, there was a team before that." Where's Charlie Rayner? Ching Johnson? The GAG line? "Boys, help an old man out here?" Boucher and the Cooks? Bobby Hull

I know the restrictions have been lifted, concering who should be listed in the HHOF section. Having recognized this, Bobby Hull didn't play a regular season or playoff game for the Rangers (just a exhibition tournament). Isn't adding Hull, going a little too far? If Manon Rheaume was to be inducted into the HHOF (as a player), would she be listed in the Lightning's HHOF section? GoodDay 18:25, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I've (again) called for the HHOF sections to be abolished. It simply invites PoVs. The addition of 'Bobby Hull' who played 4 non-NHL games with the Rangers, was the last straw. Gretzky Retiremnt

Put up a factual dispute due to the fact that most of the other NHL team pages list the date of league wide retirement as Feb. 6, 2000, whereas here it's listed as April 18, 1999 BT14 06:29, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Gretzky retired April 18, 1999. However, his #99 was retired (banner raised) on February 6, 2000. Therefore it's Feb 6, 2000. GoodDay 18:41, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Retired numbers

It is not on every team's page. 7 teams do not list or mention it. Some teams do have it as it appears on the Rangers' page, but some with the numbers in list format mention it as a note beneath the retired numbers list. Citations

Wow, I didn't even see the Missing Citations message, but wanted to start adding references; I guess just good timing. I have added them for much of the recent facts, but don't have the books that are referenced to see if those complete the research. I might look at them if I have time/find the books. Hi, Rangers editors. I've started going through and looking for citations for this article, particularly for the early history (I was told that was where help was needed). I am confused by this sentence, and thought perhaps someone with more understanding of the Rangers' history could help out: Smythe was replaced by Pacific Coast Hockey Association co-founder Lester Patrick, but kept all of the players Smythe had assembled.
Does this mean that Conn Smythe kept all of the players he assembled, and took them to a new team? Or did Lester Patrick keep all of Smythe's players? Macduffman (talk) 14:48, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

I've removed everything after the comma. Smythe was just the manager. The players would have been contracted to the owner, so the statement is intending to argue that Patrick retained the team Smythe built. There was nowhere Smythe could have taken the players to anyway, given he didn't acquire the Toronto St. Patricks until 1927. Resolute 16:48, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Uniform Section

Needs to be added. An original six team should have an entire section devoted to its jerseys; colors and history. Also, the team mascot, or lack thereof, needs to be mentioned. Love each other, or perish. ~Auden 04:30, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Bobby Hull (the sequal)

Would anyone be interested in 'omitting' Bobby Hull from this article HHOF section? Afterall, Hull never played a regular season or playoff game for the Rangers. Now that the Rangers website has changed over to the same format as the rest of the NHL addresses (rangers.nhl.com), the references to press releases, news articles, and game notes there do not work. I have tried searching for them on the website, but it does not come up with an article. Should Sean Avery's return to the team be put in the main article next to the hiring of John Tortorella? I mean really, the guy played only 1 and a half seasons in NY prior to this. Post 2005

This section is taking up way to much space. I don't have the time to do much at the moment but will try and find the time. Also I renamed success to revival as revival is a less questionable assertion . I am not totally satisfied with revival so if you have a better suggestion feel free to change it. I think there needs to be an entire new section. Maybe start a "Tortorella era" or something. I say this because Renney was really the entire post 2005 era and what Tortorella has going on is something completely different, and the team has a new identity. There has also been a pretty significant overhaul of the team, plus many young players, some of which were already here and are now coming to the forefront and the three rookies this year. Colors

The Rangers have used navy blue in their color scheme since 1997's induction of the Lady Liberty jerseys. Though the past few seasons have not seen navy blue on game jerseys (the Liberty logo is still used on practice unis), it has been used heavily on merchandise and the web site. • No more so than pink gets to be named in the Boston Red Sox infobox simply because the team markets baseball caps in pink so successfully that "Pink hat" is a widely recognized term in this area for a dilettante. I think nationality is by place of birth. so wojtek wolski should be listed with the polish flag on the roster. aquired citizenship is not listed, for example markov is canadian as well as russian but it is his birth place that is listed as is nationality. 74.14.35.254 (talk) 16:46, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Owing to dual citizenship, we can never completely satisfy everything, but as a standard, we list the nationality of a player as being the country they most closely identify with. i.e.: It would be patently ridiculous to call Robyn Regehr Brazilian simply because his parents were missionaries passing through when he was born. 2004 he played for Team Canada for the Canada/Russia series and yes it was. Resolute is right, for rosters we follow the method he mentions. For the stat leaders page its slightly different. Our rosters resolve by place of birth as well. They also happen to go by nationality. As for Markov carrying a Russian flag, he does so for the same reason why Gretzky would still carry a Canadian if he were on a roster today (or Brett Hull the US): because that is the nation he is most closely tied to. And I am ware that Wolski's parents were not missionaries, but that doesn't change the fact that he spent only three years of his life in Poland. The 2004 Canada-Russia challenge is: a) a junior event, so according to the IIHF that does not restrict the players to that team for senior events, and b) it was not even a IIHF sanctioned event, it was organized by Hockey Canada and the IHFR. That is not how things work, consensus is against you. Just because the IIHF allows you to switch in the time between being a junior and senior player does not change the fact that Wolski choose to represent Canada in a international tournament. That is what we at wikipedia use to determine the flag. As was mentioned to you 1st we go by what a player has played as internationally (in this case he has played as a canadian) and then we go by place of birth. Its really quite simple. Let's see if I can clear a few things up for you, sport. First off, this isn't the IIHF website. This is Wikipedia. We're not bound to follow IIHF regulations, IIHF rulings or IIHF pretty much anything else when it comes to deciding the nationality of players. We have our own guidelines and standards.

Secondly, those standards are decided by consensus. The standard which applies here is rather simple: we apply the nation with which a player is most strongly identified, with factors such as citizenship and for whom he decides to play internationally counted. How do we decide that again? Consensus.

Thirdly, we're not required to come up with an answer you like before applying it. The consensus answer is what gets applied, and the only options available to those on the wrong side of consensus is to work to change people's minds or to lose gracefully and move on. Right now, you're on the losing side of consensus.

According to your own rules it should be Polish, not Canadian.

The Markov case was explained to you, we use the most recent national team they played for. You just didn't like the answer you got. A international game put on by the two national organizing bodies is far different than a game with a couple poles playing a couple germans. On the one hand, I don't think the death of a fringe player is particularly notable in the broad sweep of Rangers' history; this would be more sensible in the Rangers' season article. On the other, given that homicide detectives are in on the discussion and the odds that his death's directly attributable to that on-ice concussion, this certainly could bloom into a controversy which would merit such a mention.
