Article name[edit]

The commonname for this type of rolling stock is Hunter railcar, the J class terminology is only an inhouse code that is not really used in the outside world. Unlike the other classes of NSW rolling stock named in the X set format, these do not carry target plates. The New South Wales Hunter railcar name is consistent with how other NSW TrainLink rolling stock articles are named, New South Wales Endeavour railcar, New South Wales XPT etc.

They are referred to as Hunters by original operator CityRail and successor Transport for NSW. Likewise secondary cites from the Australian Journey of Multi-Disciplinary Engineering (The Hunter Rail Car: A Versatile Design Solution for Regional Rail Transport), Railway Digest (Hunter Railcars delayed, New Hunter Railcars commence testing, Hunter Rail Cars on tour), the Rail Motor Society (Hunter Rail Cars) and Transit Australia (The Hunter Rail Cars) also refer to them as such.
