Foundation[edit]

When was NS founded? In fact, could we have little bit of history?

If you want, I can translate the Dutch wiki of the NS into English. The NS was founded on January 1st, 1938, through a merger of the 'Hollandse IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HSM)' (Dutch Iron Railroad-Company) and the 'Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS)' (Company for the Exploitation of the Governmentrailroads). They had been working together since 1917. Schalkcity (talk) 23:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ownership[edit]

I've read the whole of this article, and I'm still not sure who owns NS. I deduce that it's a government-owned organisation run as a company, but this is through reading the history and noting that it's not obviously been sold. This should surely be a part of the summary. Could someone please elucidate, possibly by checking the Dutch version of the article? --Froggienation (talk) 16:33, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The NS is a government-owned company. All the shares are in hands of the Dutch national government (Ministry of Finance). Under Dutch law, the NS has the sole right to provide train services on the so-called 'main lines' and some minor secondary lines. The NS is a so called 'Naamloze Vennootschap', comparable to the Britsh 'plc' and the American 'LLC' with the Dutch government as the sole stakeholder. However, due to the great freedom the NS always have had, it has never been a government-owned corporation, but always a private corporation, with the government holding the majority or all the stakes. Employees of the NS are not regarded civil servants, but merity semi-civil servants.

In the coming years, the last few secondary lines will be transferred to other companies in the same way the other secondary lines have been transferred. The NS has a contract until 2015 under which it has to provide a certain level of services, customer satisfaction, punctuality, cleanliness and so on. If they fail to meet the targets, the Dutch government is allowed to transfer the rights to run passenger train services on the main lines to another company. The results are presented yearly, both to the government as well as to the public. FYI, I'm Dutch and if you want, I can translate the Dutch wiki about the NS into English. Changes[edit]

I have mainly tried to correct the grammar and a few other places where I thought the language was un-encyclopedic. I think a number of statements need to be supported with citations as well. I've flagged a few of them, though there may be others. This article probably still needs some work before it meets standards. 4.243.206.92 01:58, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added the company box with information from the financial reports of the NS. I'm somewhat confused about when to use the green and red arrows, but meh. I also added the section on the history of the NS, which is a (liberal) translation of the Dutch articel. Crownsteler 21:38, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Statement makes little sense in english.[edit]

"The NS went on a strike once during the war, in the winter of 1944, after it had declined to participate in one a year earlier."

This is possibly poorly translated and makes little sense in English. Did the employees of NS go on strike against the company ? Or did the company itself go "on strike" ? And the previous year, who "declined to participate" ? The workers ? The company ? Did anyone else go on strike that year ? Eregli bob (talk) 06:40, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The strike was against the German occupation. A year earlier, many public services went on strike for the same purpose. Serving the state was, after all, serving the Germans. Unfortunately, when the railway workers went on strike, the result was that Germany stole much of the Dutch railroads and locomotives, "which weren't used in NL anymore anyway". 109.131.35.53 (talk) 18:50, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Track-way ownership[edit]

Who owns and operates the track-ways used by Dutch trains? Is train routing and scheduling controlled by operations centers somewhere? Are these government- or privately-owned? How are operations for international trains (e.g., Thalys) coordinated? Who handles track construction and maintenance? Virgil H. Soule (talk) 17:21, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Logo - driving on the left?[edit]

The logo of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen seems to indicate that trains drive on the left. But do they? According to the Wikipedia article about Left- and right-hand traffic, Dutch trains drive on the right.

So why does the logo indicate that trains drive on the left?--Oz1cz (talk) 19:18, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can't answer the question about the logo, but the trains here drive on the right. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.217.22.199 (talk) 20:10, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Creative accounting ... correct terminology[edit]

As I read this paragraph under controversies it seems to me it should all read avoiding/avoidance not evading/evasion. Especially as getting that wrong can be actionable. Am I missing something?

"In 2013, it appeared that the NS used a daughter company in Ireland, "NS Financial Services Company", to evade taxes in the Netherlands. The procedure was determined to be lawful, but it was unfavorable for the Dutch taxpayers who do not believe that the Nederlandse Spoorwegen, which operates fixed trains in the Netherlands, can be Irish.[citation needed] From 1998 the NS used the favorable tax climate in Ireland, which resulted in a profit of more than 270 million euros.[6] The corporate tax in Ireland was 12.5%, in the Netherlands 25% at that time.[7] The Dutch company NS used the Irish daughter to buy new trains, among others the high-speed Fyra trains from the Italian firm Ansaldo Breda. The Dutch Minister of Finance, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, wrote to the parliament that NS would stop this tax evasion."
