Reverted pictures[edit]

Whilst I agree the Monument itself isn't the focus of the article, most station pics are external shots with internal shots as additionals (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_London_Transport for an example). There just aren't many exterior shots of TWM stations in the Commons.

The reason I added the platform 4 picture to the article was to illustrate the mobile phone usage - something that is certainly unique in the UK and is not universal elsewhere.

I understand that, but the picture of Grey's Monument, while being a perfectly fine picture of the monument, is not a very good picture of the Metro station, and in terms of aspect ration it is far too tall for the infobox. Likewise, the Platform 4 picture is a pretty good picture of the Metro station interior, but as it is a long exposure it's not entirely clear that the person in it is using a mobile phone. I debated retaining the caption referring to this but it was a little long for the infobox, so substituted one of my own making to describe Platform 4 instead.
I've put the platform shot back into the infobox with a shortened version of the phone caption, while putting the monument on the left-hand side with a shortened caption. If we can take a better exterior shot of the station, that would be fine for the infobox, but in the existing image of the monument the station is only peripheral. I think that's a reasonable compromise. DrFrench 17:34, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed dubious fact (uncited)[edit]

"During construction of the station in the late 1970s, the monument was temporarily removed."

Something like this really needs a citation. While I wasn't alive at the time the station was being built, nothing I've ever read about the Metro construction or the monument itself has mentioned anything like it.

Not only that, it seems highly implausible, as the monument is so massive. I can envisage them being able to move the monument a few dozen feet if that was necessary (using rollers, as has been done for many buildings and structures), but the idea of actually removing the entire structure, and replacing it at a later date, just does not ring true at all. 217.155.20.163 20:01, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strictly speaking, the monument is the figure of Early Grey at the top, which was indeed removed during Metro construction, along with parts of the column, as there was a lot of concern that it would fall off due to the vibrations of Metro construction amplified by the principle of leverage. Though this is not, as far as I can tell, mentioned anywhere on the internet, that hardly mean it didn't happen. If someone would like to find the exact dates, they could look it up in the Metro file at Central Library (difficult at present) or the Evening Chronicle at the time.
