Not a bad start, needs organization, more info.[edit]

This is a good start, but the article needs to be organized. Also, examples of specific species should be given. Which species are present in the human digestive system?--24.136.30.122 06:50, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

needs to be much more organized ..and i can't find the classification or a picture of the methanogen .on all of the other things that i searched a picture poped right up ..and so did the classification .but i can't find anything that i need on here):

Biology Domain[edit]

I removed "biology" from "biology domain" in the first sentence because for instance, molecular biology is a domain of biology, but Archaea make up a domain of life, as understood in phylogeneticla terms. uuuǝıɹ 12:04, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Altogether[edit]

This article needs some serious work, the style is very unscientific when it gets to explaining cellular metabolism of Methanogens here. Also, the title of this article should be "Methanogens" and not "Methanogen".uuuǝıɹ 12:23, 26 February 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Riennn (talkcontribs) [reply]

Syntrophy[edit]

These methanogens, much like acetogens should have some mention of syntrophy with secondary fermenters which produce the H2 gas that they use. Without this constant source of H2, their lifestyle does not even have a niche.--Jonthecheet (talk) 20:06, 16 March 2009 (UTC

Chemotroph or autotroph[edit]

Would it not be more accurate to replace the line:

"Most methanogens are autotrophic producers, but those that oxidize CH3COO- are classed as chemotroph instead."

with:

"All known methanogens are chemotrophs, the hydrogenotrophic methanogens are chemoautotrophs and the acetoclastic methanogens are chemoheterotrophs." Pchisarik (talk) 14:45, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

May add that acetoclastic methanogenesis occurs primarily (as in siginificant amounts) in Wetlands / see also Wetland methane emissionsand both belong to the domain archaea. Prokaryotes (talk) 23:57, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is Methanothermococcus okinawensis a Methanogen?[edit]

Came across Methanothermococcus okinawensis in this guardian article https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/feb/27/bacteria-thrive-in-conditions-similar-to-those-on-saturns-moon-say-scientists-enceladus J mareeswaran (talk) 08:05, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think everything in Methanococci is a methanogen, @J mareeswaran:, so I would say yes. Nessie (talk) 15:57, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
