Clarification requested[edit]

Mesocyclones form when strong changes of wind speed and/or direction with height ("wind shear") sets the lower part of the atmosphere spinning horizontally. The updraft of a thunderstorm can then draw this area of spinning air from horizontal to vertical.

This is rather hard to understand...a more lengthy description specifying exactly what "vertical" and "horizontal" mean, and how linear winds are translated into spin would be helpful. A diagram would be very helpful. -- Beland 22:37, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yay, we have diagrams now! Thanks! -- Beland 05:17, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You need to know what Vertical and Horizontal mean? Look in a dictionary! --24.236.151.207 20:27, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How much difference between warm/cold air?[edit]

The need for warm air described in this article is interesting. If a mesocyclone predicted to form a tornado were headed for a major urban park (perhaps New York's Central Park) and the superintendent had 15-20 minutes warning to turn on all the sprinklers, could he stop it in its tracks? (And in a like vein, what if all the lawn sprinklers in a suburb were keyed to a master alert system?) How much difference in temperature does it take to stop the tornado? You need relatively high moisture values, over a sufficient depth of the lower atmosphere, for a thunderstorm with a mesocyclone to develop. Throwing sprinklers on would make little difference. Cooling off the lowest couple miles of the atmosphere would be needed to deflect its track, likely to the right. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:18, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not fab?[edit]

Just noting, in case it actually meant anything, that I removed the second sentence of the second paragraph, which was the bizarre phrase, "They're not fab." None of the things I can think of as an expansion for "fab" make any sense in the context of "encyclopedia articles about weather phenomena", so I took it out. (Is it short for "fabulous"? That's a value judgement that doesn't belong in an encyclopedia article. Short for "fabricated"? It's fairly obvious that they're neither fictional nor manufactured. Is it supposed to be an acronym? What does it stand for, then? It's not, as far as I know, a meaningful word in its own right.) --Proginoskes (talk) 21:22, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion[edit]

Just an FYI to myself or others, this article needs more information on the mesocyclone detection algorithm and mesoanticyclones, which redirect here. Ks0stm (TCGE) 16:31, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
