Birth[edit]

birth year was listed as 1964, the year she graduated from Sarah Lawrence. actually 1942, dont know if august date is correct. born nyc, not peru. not sure what prev. ed. was smokin. Multiple sources say that this woman was born in Lima, Peru, and she's in some categories of Peruvian people, so I put a request for citation that she was born in New York. --Descendall 05:40, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now, why is Monk in the LGBTProject? Seems unsourced or poorly sourced; and not really a central theme of her public work or public life. The current reference [1] is pretty slim. --Knulclunk 02:30, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right - it is pretty slim. The other two references I found were likewise not all that good - [2] and [3]. However, a quick search on Google of "meredith monk lesbian" shows that she's heavily involved in the LGBT community, performing for or with gay choruses, for LGBT centers, etc.
I started looking for a ref because someone had put her in the Category:Lesbian musicians, and as you noted, it wasn't sourced. The TLA reference above states that she's a lesbian unequivocally - but I didn't find anything that wasn't a "4 sale" ref.
If you strongly object, I'll remove the banner, but all evidence seems to point in the direction of her being a lesbian. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 05:23, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was Meredith's student and transcriber from 1998-2000 during the production of Magic Frequencies. Meredith was partnered with a woman for nearly 20 years before her partner's death in 2002. However, she does not discuss her sexuality publicly and has also had long term relationships with men. I recommend respecting her discretion and excluding references to her personal sexuality/affiliations. Opusvox (talk) 06:23, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

mercy album[edit]

Link to "Mercy (album)" goes to other artist's album (also titled "Mercy"). I have small experience, but someone should fix this.

Place of birth[edit]

Meredith Monk was born in New York City. In the introduction to "Meredith Monk" (1997), edited by Deborah Jowitt, on page 3 Jowitt states that "Imagination and mischievousness goading each other on, Monk once wrote in a program biography that she was born in Peru, a fact that has become embedded in her history. She was born in New York City." --Gwilelym —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gwilelym (talkcontribs) 20:00, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I've added that info and reference. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 21:20, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well the body says Peru now, so which is correct? 68.10.240.68 (talk) 14:25, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ratings --> Start[edit]

I'm surprised that this article received a B rating. B rating (according to the fairly liberal Biography project assessment standards) means "the article is mostly complete and without major issues". (I came here expecting to apply the more detailed standards of the Composers project.) There's almost no early biographical information in it (or were the years between 1942 and the early 1960s time-warped away?). The article reads like little more than a publicity profile; and considering a biography of her already exists (noted in a citation), there is presumably much room for expansion. I've lowered the rating to Start. Magic♪piano 14:58, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

dance/theatre career[edit]

Meredith was already quite well-known in the mid-70s, before she created her vocal group. While voice and other music was a central part of her earlier work, it was often marketed as dance and she was often considered a choreographer who also worked with music, or as a multimedia artist. She was not especially considered central in the performance art nor the music scenes of the time.

Is the absence of any mention of her scenic body work in this article reasonable? Arguably it is what brought her fame.

Similarly, I'm not sure why Beverly Schmidt Blossom is singled out for her studies at Sarah Laurence, hardly the best known of her professors there.

And why the absence of Ping Chong, who she co-signed much work with?

I don't know if this reflects how Monk chooses to present herself today, but an encyclopedia should certainly not avoid the sources of her fame, and should not slant its coverage to an "official biography", if that is the case.
