Affiliation

Can anyone confirm the affiliation with university of wisconsin mentioned in the article? I've heard the PA programs are, but wasn't aware of one with the medical school.

Ranking

"places Mayo among the top one or two institutions in the nation." This needs a citation, I cannot find anything that supports this.

US News and World reports places it rather highly, especially if you factor in nonNIH funding; add that to their algorithm and Mayo is just past number 5. The reports and their procedure for compiling ranks is part of their copyrighted subscription so I am not sure how to site it, though I could site it and rely on the user to get the subscription and know how to read it. Actually, in reading the section you mention, it refers to the clincal facilities available to the students of the Mayo Clinic, which is a seperate issue from the school rankings. I've added the reference from the Mayo Clinic main pages.

The non-NIH funding added in wouldn't make sense as such, because other schools receive major non-NIH funding as well. You should mention it that the hospital is ranked in top two, and the school is top 25.

I think the point being made is that the MAJORITY of Mayo's funding is nonNIH, a noted concession in the US News and World reports. As it is it looks fine to me as the sentence is commenting on the clinical facility in addition to the school. Gtadoc 19:20, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

It's still misleading because you are the one placing them among the top one or two institutions, not USNews. USNews ranks them the 23rd best research medical school in the nation. Does this mean that MMS is the 23rd best med school in the nation? Probably not, it's probably much higher, but I don't think it's okay to just factor in the non-NIH funding and re-rank research medical schools.

Please sign your posts so I can know when they are left/ also, if you follow the citation you will notice that it is not "me" placing anyone anywhere. The citations and the text both talk about the Mayo Clinic, there is a seperate place in the text talking about the medical school itself with its own citation. Please point out to me where I place anyone anywhere; if you feel a citation is needed somewhere feel free to add it or the 'citation needed' tag, otherwise please read the ones already in the article first before commenting... "Most Selective"?

It says it's the most selective school with approx 3,000 to 42 spots. However, UCF Medical School opening in Fall 2009 is now considered more selective, with 40,000 applicants to only 40 spots. Source Jerr (talk) 02:48, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Ah, I see. It actually says 4,000, not 40,000. That makes more sense. And I don't think it matters, as its a one time blip because of a free tuition offer for the first year of new students in order to try to get students to attend a new and (for 3 years) unaccredited school. I remmeber seeing that and thinking "cool, I'd do it" anyways, just because medical school was so damn expensive! Fuzbaby (talk) 01:16, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

History section clean-up and expansion

The text added to Mayo Clinic School of Medicine § History by Randomeditor1000 has been moved to the History section here (note: no text or citations have been removed or edited). Please see Talk:Mayo Clinic School of Medicine § History of MCSOM vs. MCCMS and its other constituent schools for an earlier discussion of this material (further discussion should take pace here).

At present, the text repetitively overstates the role of the University of Minnesota in a manner inconsistent with the cited sources. This history should be consolidated (e.g. no need to state "The two institutions held close relationships in the early 19th century, with William James Mayo serving as a Regent of the University of Minnesota." followed by "The two institutions held close relationships in the early 19th century. William James Mayo was a Regent of the University of Minnesota."). It also needs to maintain a WP:NPOV (e.g. "under the direction of the University of Minnesota" means that the Mayo Foundation was directed by the University of Minnesota, which is not supported by the references). I will let other editors handle these fixes in order to avoid hostility from Randomeditor1000. I am happy to give my input on this talk page. My response on the specific section here would be that I agree there doesn't need to be the same text repeated twice on both articles. I'm unsure of why you placed the text in it's entirety here in the first place today after undoing my edits at the other article? Did you want to intentionally create an additional discussion just for fun. The history text relates most directly to the article subject Mayo Clinic School of Medicine as the first programs were developed there and related to training of physicians. For that reason, I believe a summary is more appropriate on this page. In addition, the current text understates the ties between the University of Minnesota which directly provided degree educational programming at the Mayo Clinic until 1972. The Mayo Clinic physicians were given joint appointments in the University of Minnesota Medical School according to some sources.

In addition it is a fact that the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (not to be confused with the Mayo Clinic Foundation) was created to fund the University of Minnesota programs at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The irony to me is that editor Trantorian doesn't even bother to read the direct quotes from the reference sources that explicitly state this. In sum one could state that the University provided all academic degree programs at the Mayo Clinic at the Mayo Clinic's request specifically from the Mayo brothers.

Article status

I was alerted to this page by an IP at my talk page.

This really is a perfect example of a horrible piece of WP:BOOSTER. Way, way too much of this is cited to sources that are not independent of the institution. This is not a Wikipedia article but rather an extension of their websites. It fails WP:PROMO (and please actually read PROMO before you reply). Jytdog (talk) 20:26, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Jytdog! I agree that this page needs work and that your tags are appropriate here. I believe, however that the IP was actually referring Mayo Clinic School of Medicine as a WP:BOOSTER—two different IPs have tagged it recently. I don't understand the specific issue as they did not provide details. I read through WP:PROMO and it does not seem to apply to that article.
