Sheridan supported Rose by explaining "This flag dips to no earthly king."[edit]

The origin of this frequently seen quotation has been analysed by Bill Mallon and Ian Buchanan in the Journal of Olympic History September 1999, p21. Finding the first reference to the tradition or the quotation in 1952, they conclude, "As to Martin Sheridan’s famous remark, if he said it, he must have done so very privately."
