Proposed merge[edit]

Readers looking for the newspapers or for Thessaloniki's airport might as well look at Macedonia and will have to go to the disambiguation page (since April 2009 at Macedonia (disambiguation)), where the link to this page is at the bottom of the page under see also and can easily be over looked. My other concern is that non-English users might well seek for the country under spellings like Makedonija, Makedoniya etc.

It is apparently common practice to bundle similar terms in a single dab page.

I think it is okay this way, we should try to not clutter the main dab page. This spelling is mostly about proper names of other things than those in the main dab page. Anyway I don't know what the policies suggest is the correct way. Shadowmorph (talk) 16:32, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I factored this page out mainly in order to discourage the permanent tinkering and swamping of the main Macedonia (disambiguation) page with only tangentially related entries, and I'd suggest to keep it this way. I don't think there's much disadvantage to traffic. Makedonia gets only a small number of web hits from searchers (20-30 per day on average) [1], and of those the large majority appear to end up at the Greek newspaper [2]. The number of other readers who might have to navigate from one dab page to the other is negligible, and they are well catered for by the "see also" links and the first sentence here. It makes sense to merge them.

Makedonia (IPA: [makʲe̞ðo̞ˈnia]) is a local pronunciation of Macedonia. Thus, both terms are variant form/spellings of the same word.

Additionally, I can speak from experience as someone who speaks more than English. No mater which term is native to the viewer, if they're reading the English Wikipedia, looking for the English spelling is the natural course of action. -- EDG161 (talk) 02:36, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly, that's why so few people who are searching for the geographical meanings end up here by mistake. That's why it makes sense to keep them apart. This page is only for those items where the -k- version is a fixed proper name that remains unchanged even in English usage, such as the names of the newspapers.
