Notable Madisonians

The list of notable Madisonians is quite large. It might be a good idea to create a new article just for that. For example, Grand Rapids, MI links to List of people associated with Grand Rapids, Michigan. Pdcook (talk) 13:30, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

OK, well if no one has any objections, I'm going to go ahead and create a new article entitled List of people associated with Madison, WI and transfer the content of the section of the parent article to the new one.Pdcook (talk) 02:45, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
You would have to spell out Wisconsin, not abbreviate it. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:02, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that slipped my mind, but it's been taken care of. Pdcook (talk) 18:21, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

What about Stalins daughter? I think shes notable enough and she lives in Medison. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.2.173.156 (talk) 04:41, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

She lived in Spring Green/Richland Center actually, and is dead in any case. Gaijin42 (talk) 15:44, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

The result was merge into Madison, Wisconsin. -- Mesconsing (talk) 21:20, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

The Madison Fire and Police Departments are not notable independent of the city itself. Their articles are not likely to become substantial. Recommend merging with city article. -- Mesconsing (talk) 14:26, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Concur - non-notable on their own parts. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:40, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Height of capitol building

The Architecture section mentions the capitol building as being the 2nd tallest in the U.S. behind the U.S. Capitol Dome. According to the Texas Capitol wiki however, the Texas Capitol is the tallest in the U.S. and taller than the national capitol. I just wanted to bring this up and ask someone to change it. If there is no feedback in a few weeks I'll do it myself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.192.200.182 (talk) 20:15, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

The Texas wiki is including the height of the various statues at the top of the dome. This article is referring to the actual height of the dome. Gaijin42 (talk) 20:34, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Structure

Hi. I'm going through all the US Cities (as per List of United States cities by population) in an effort to provide some uniformity in structure. Anyone have an issue with me restructuring this article as per Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline. I won't be changing any content, merely the order. Occasionally, I will also move a picture just to clean up spacing issues. I've already gone through the top 20 or so on the above list, if you'd like to see how they turned out. Thoughts? Onel5969 (talk) 16:28, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Statistics

It makes no sense that the statistics box says, for area and population, "City and State". Perhaps it means "City and County", although even that doesn't make sense because why would the population of the city and county be less than the urban population? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tedtoal (talkcontribs) 02:46, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

They could be saying that Madison could evolve I be its own state. Of course, this is ridiculous, on many levels. Although, if the city grows by the population it is at every two years, than it's quite possible, but such a theory isn't. Also, it could have been a honest mistake. All theories are possible. Only one makes sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.56.82.130 (talk) 19:43, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

"Party school"

I moved the bulk of this to the UW article, as it talks about it mostly in conjunction with the university. NickBurns 00:34, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Actually, no, it doesn't. I see your motivation, but most of the problem takes place off campus and fewer than 5% of the arrests are UW students. There's a connection -- the Halloween event is part of why UW has that "party" reputation -- but if I'd have to choose whose problem it is, I'd say it's Madison's problem, not the university's.--Dhartung | Talk 16:25, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't dispute that it belongs in both articles, Dhartung, and that it is a city problem. I just moved THAT particular batch of text, because as it was written, it seemed to refer more to the university. NickBurns 17:06, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

I hold my theory that the party reputation is from Madison's nicknames. Mad house, mad city, etcetera, etcetera. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.56.82.130 (talk) 19:47, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Memorial Union not a place of interest?

Why not? Scott182 18:57, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Because, it just isn't something the Wikipedians wanted to put there. (Lazy bums.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.56.82.130 (talk) 19:48, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Erm, no!

Don't mean to be rude Wikipedia, but check your columns. Half of everything is wrong. So, pls edit it. Stat. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.56.82.130 (talk) 19:51, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Hoocąk Name

The name of Madison used by the Hoocąk Indians was Teejóp, which is essentially a translation of "Four Lakes." I cited my source, which comes from a book on the language, and yet, somebody keeps removing it. Am I doing something wrong, or are you just censoring me? Please stop it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.128.90.51 (talk) 00:00, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

That's what they called it, but that wasn't the name of the city. At best, a mention in the article "History of..." page is warranted, if there is a discussion of those Indians there. Else, doesn't belong here. Onel5969 TT me 00:14, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
That's what they called it, but that wasn't the name of the city? That's what a name is. It's whatever you call it. And there's over a dozen other Wisconsin cities that also have their Hoocąk name on their page, including Milwaukee. Teejóp is the name of the city and it has been since before it was ever called Madison. It deserves to be on the wikipedia page. Stop trying to censor me and my people.
4 different people have removed it and you've added it 6 times today. I don't think we need alternative place names listed in the lead paragraph of a city article. This is not censorship, this is you reverting things 5 times. --Dual Freq (talk) 01:30, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
This is the only city that refuses to put it on the article. Even Milwaukee has theirs. Why do you think your city is better? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.128.90.51 (talk) 09:18, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
The others will most likely be removed as well, since they are just as unnecessary and inappropriate as this one. Onel5969 TT me 13:35, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
There is no evidence that there was a settlement at the present site of Madison which was known by that name. The same is true for all the others you have been scattering across articles. When a city is clearly the successor settlement to a known Native American settlement, and we know the name by which the Native Americans called that settlement (obvious example: Tenochtitlan/Mexico City), it might be appropriate, but only in those limited circumstances. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:53, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
You hit the nail on the head, Orangemike. Onel5969 TT me 15:02, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
I agree. I can also see listing the translation in the text for places like Nekoosa, Wisconsin and Neenah, Wisconsin, but I am a bit confused that somehow both names mean "running water" in the Winnebago language. I don't think it's needed for Madison or other cities that don't have a historical link. --Dual Freq (talk) 21:44, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Edit reversion and the arrangement of images in the "History" section

Greetings and felicitations. Back in January (I apologize for taking so long to bring this up) I edited the article’s “History section”, which edit was reverted by 32.218.40.17. I posted a request to that user’s talk page to restore my edit, but they have not responded. The arrangement of images still stands and in browser windows of more than 1200 pixels leaves significant whitespace above the cityscape photograph ("View from Capitol dome taken between 1880 and 1899"), which in my opinion is unsightly and unnecessary. May I change the image arrangement back to the way I had it (that is, place the right side images in a gallery)? —DocWatson42 (talk) 04:53, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Bump. Anyone? —DocWatson42 (talk) 05:55, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Bicycling is a form of transportation

The article assigned "Bicycling" to its own section instead of assigning it to a subsection of "Transportation". What say the editors of Madison, Wisconsin to moving "Bicycling" into "Transportation"? Cheers, Oldsanfelipe (talk) 22:43, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

John Roach

Here's a source for John Roach: Roach's IMDB page. I guess he only co-wrote on that one movie, but his website documents his history in TV. He also has a column in Madison magazine.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Roboconnell (talkcontribs) 06:12, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
