Maiden Voyage[edit]
With modern ships this is something of a problem. Her maiden voyage is the journey from Southampton to the Med which she commenced on 4 March. This is nearer the old fashioned line voyage where passengers joined at one port and left at another. Her maiden cruise is the one starting on the 24th where passengers will, presumably, join and leave from the same port. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 19:26, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- She did a mini cruise for trade reps on 3 March but my assumption is that no one paid to sail on that. However paying passengers are being carried on the positioning cruise commencing 4 March (deemed a pre inaugural cruise). As a purist I would define the journey from the builders to Southampton as the maiden voyage and 3 March as the date she commenced operations Lyndaship (talk) 20:04, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- Traditionally the delivery trip doesn't count. No one refers to the journey from Belfast to Southampton as Titanic's maiden voyage. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 21:33, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- Good example and I see on checking that wiki defines the maiden journey as the first one when the vessel is used for its intended purpose (which is at variance with most dictionary definitions but makes more sense) so in this case either the 3rd or 4th depending on if you think carrying industry people on a jolly is a cruise or not Lyndaship (talk) 11:08, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
- The industry trip was advertising so I think you could go with the 4th, alternatively just leave it as March. During the delivery trip the ship is still in the hands of the builders, checking everything is working properly, the hand-over normally takes place at the port the ship is delivered to. - Other than yachts I have never heard of a builder contracting to deliver the ship to a specified port, if they did it would indeed be a delivery voyage but I think you will find that the acceptance is always at the port of construction and the shipping company then undertake the voyage to where the ship picks up its first cargo Lyndaship (talk) 13:20, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
