Misinformation now enshrined on the WWW[edit]

Back in 2008 a now inactive editor asserted that this song was based on the 1881 tune, "The Spanish Cavalier." No source was cited for this misinfo. I'm not a musicologist (after the Blurred Lines travesty that's a badge of honor!), but after hearing the 1881 ditty, let me say that's an 'interesting' assertion. Because the misinfo was here at WP for 14 years, it's now repeated on several websites that borrow from WP. Removed material was a clear violation of WP:OR. I agree that the similarity was too strongly stated. I see the statement of it has now been toned down a little, and more clearly referenced. To my ear the similarity consists in the use of a single distinctive phrase rather than the whole pattern of the song, and it would be good if this could be stated by someone more qualified than me to express the point correctly. (Although maybe such a clearer statement would count as original research? What exactly does the reference say?) Mrmedley (talk) 01:47, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
