Let´s play[edit]

I´ve never heard of the concept of a "longplay" (the hell is that even supposed to mean?!) while "Let´s play"s are utterly common on e.g. Youtube. Yeah... fix it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.47.164.143 (talk) 20:07, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notice to Editors[edit]

This article shall not be used to track the emergence of the term. Notice there is no history section about the etymology. Just the culture surrounding it and major places to find videos.

Why the Longplay Article was Created[edit]

For years I wanted to find these kinds of recordings for games I never completed or games I planned to buy.

I had no idea what they were called, and even wondered if such videos even existed. My searches were always overwhelmed by speedruns, which don't reflect normal gameplay or atmosphere.

One day, I was tasked creating screencasts to demonstrate classic games for the curriculum of a college New media department Game Design class. Dune 2 was troublesome, and I stumbled across Recorded Amiga Games.

I would have suggested ammending the Speedrun article except that that page is already long and under discussion for the forseeable future. The alternative is separate articles for the different varieties of play-throughs with 'see also' sections that tie them together.

Neologism Status[edit]

Its neologism status will be difficult to overcome. Even speedruns, popular as they are, have no books about them aside from an entry in the Guiness Book of Records. If 'longplay' will ever appear in print, it'll be a brief chapter in a speedrun book, if the author has ever heard of the concept. There just isn't that much to say that doesn't already apply to recording games (video editing/encoding) or playing them well.

Possibly the article could include best practices for demonstrating various genres (General/RTS/FPS/etc); like hover the mouse over things briefly prior to clicking; avoid multitasking; or lapse/cut dead time. The problem is unless such suggestions appear in a 'Longplay Guide' elsewhere, that would be original research or synthesis. Wikipedia isn't for that.

Slowrun[edit]

This is similar to a slowrun, which was unfortunately deleted earlier. Perhaps a merge is in order? I can add a lot of the elements to this article and create a redirect. Let me know what you guys think, I might put the article back up for recreation if anyone agrees. --Banime (talk) 06:03, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. That sounds like it's better placed in a side note under speedruns (which is overcrouded as it is). I did some searching for slowrun and "slow run" videos, and it looks pretty obscure (not many hits). This article shouldn't become a collection of neologisms that didn't fit in speedrun. I'm confident that Longplays, by themselves, are produced with sufficient quantity that they can be recognized as a legitimate phenomenon. It's just a matter of waiting for viable published materials to mention them. --Vhati (talk) 04:02, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
From what I've seen, Longplays and Slowruns seem almost identical. They are both designed to complete a game as fully as possible. I tried to get slowrun undeleted so we could merge both articles and their sources, but it was not accepted. --Banime (talk) 17:02, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How so? Aren't slowruns about exploiting every excuse to stall, like this? Longplays are about recording how a game should ideally be played: playing at the normal pace, meeting goals, watching cutscenes, and not failing. Longplays turn a game into a movie. --Vhati (talk) 03:48, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use?[edit]

Can longplays be considered fair use of games, or not? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.192.105.99 (talk) 18:58, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Longplay (video games)Longplay – Per WP:SMALLDETAILS. The article was boldly moved away from this title in 2014, but records are generally known as "long play" and the gaming term is "longplay". As for the album of the same title, it isn't nearly as prominent and can't claim to be the primary topic (it gets an average daily pageview of 1 and the gaming article, 27. If that fails, I would request it be moved to Longplay (video gaming) per WP:CONSISTENCY. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 02:13, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - mainly because I doubt that a lot of people know that the LP is not a single word, but also on the fact that as you've mentioned, there is another article with the same exact name, so why start fighting over a primary topic for a page with 27 average daily views? That is so insignificant that its absurd. --Gonnym (talk) 10:22, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • See WP:INSIGNIFICANT. Anyway, I never planned to start a "fight" over anything, so please don't assume bad faith. It seems like you are the one who is being overtly hostile. I don't see Airplane! requiring a disambiguation despite having almost the same name as the flying craft.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 13:35, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
