Issues[edit]

This list has a lot of problems, there are no citations and no way to determine how notable these snipers are. They all appear to have articles but many snipers are missing from this list, the list of just notable military snipers on the article sniper is longer than this one, possibly it should be moved here or the list should be merged back into the article. At the very least this list should be broken out into time periods and/or military and non-military snipers and referenced.--Doug.(talk contribs) 16:13, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed, feel free to add more with appropriate sources.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 00:17, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the ordering so strange? It seems the countries with snipers of renown are listed far below those with more mediocre ones. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.212.162.132 (talk) 20:44, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, definitely some weirdness and bad sourcing, even now a full eleven years after Doug's original comment - for example, the Chris Kyle entry claims that the Pentagon confirmed 160 kills. Except, that's just sourcing back to a claim from Kyle himself, and it should definitely be noted, the Pentagon doesn't track or document confirmed kills, so would have no ability(let alone willingness) to confirm that number. We're basically taking the guy's word without evidence, because he wrote it down at one point, in a book which has long been known to be riddled with factual errors and in some cases, outright lies. I checked a sources behind Simo Häyhä entry. According to it, Antti Rantamaa claimed it was 259 after Häyhä got wounded. In February 17 he got awarded an honorary rifle for his deed of shooting 219 enemies with a rifle and the same number with submachine gun. 500+ number comes from his Diary, where he claimed that during the war he shot about 500 Soviets, he didn't say it was all while he was sniping, or even with his rifle. So it either includes non-sniper kills or is self-credited, in other words those aren't "confirmed sniper kills". Yet, the myth presists. L0ll3r (talk) 19:36, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Real snipers only[edit]

Erwin König should be removed from this article, it should be limited to real people only, not fictitious characters.Royalcourtier (talk) 23:28, 5 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Musa the Sniper[edit]

There's been a few attempts to add "Musa the Sniper" and I've copy editted for format of the page - short comment, single country. Going back and forward on the amount of detail that's right for the page. The ref I saw had the name of the sniper as 'Herval Hardem' (http://uk.businessinsider.com/meet-musa-the-sniper-scourge-of-isis-in-kobani-2015-10?r=US&IR=T). Not entirely convinced from the sources of the confirmed number of kills made so added 'allegedly'. We've had previous sniper claims made from the Middle East and often they appear as propaganda stories, may need to review refs further to ensure notability. Mikhail Surkov - the most effective sniper?[edit]

This, rather mysterious, Mikhail Surkov has 702 confirmed kills according to Pravda. The article states that the number is a total "which would make him the most effective sniper of the European conflict". I think it is hard to decide which sniper is the most effective. Take Simo Häyhä as an example. He had 500 kills in less one hundred days, and worked in temperatures a low as -40 degrees Celsius at a time of year with very few daylight hours. He seemed to be pretty effective to me. How do you know that Mikail Surkov was more effective? Did he have 702 kills in 128 days? The source for the statement that Mikail Surkov was the most effective sniper is "Mark Spicer and Pat Farey, Sniping: An Illustrated History". Do anyone have access to this book? I think the article should at least clarify who thinks Mikail Surkov is the most effective sniper of the European theatre. Kindest /EriFr (talk) 21:05, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I believe 'effective' here is used to denote 'highest'. I'll update the bio to reflect this. Londonclanger (talk) 18:58, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Soviets snipers and references/sources[edit]

I've tried to locate sources for many of the Soviet snipers mentioned on the list. However, there are a number that only seem to appear on one or two lists that are repeated by a couple of websites. The primary list appears to be the Top 10 written on War History Online - https://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/10-lethal-snipers-wwii.html - but this list has no references for the claims made.

Would be beneficial to find secondary sources to confirm confirmed kills for snipers such as Mikhail Budenkov, Nikolay Yakovlevich Ilyin, Ivan Kulbertinov, Vladimir Pchelintsev and Stepan Petrenko. Otherwise it probably makes sense to remove until sources can be obtained. Londonclanger (talk) 19:25, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Missing sources[edit]

Please source ALL snipers according to wiki rules. Otherwise i will delete the entries in the near future. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.17.140.107 (talk) 06:16, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
