Removing John Paul I

I am removing John Paul I from the list. The link even says "in dispute," whereas this article clearly indicates a list of murdered popes, period. John 06:59, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

I concur, it has been reinserted but I am going to rectify this. There is no evidence to suggest he was murdered- simply supposition.Dunfermline Scholar (talk) 18:07, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Pius XI

The article should perhaps look into allegations that Pius XI was poisoned. (see Talk:Pope Pius XI, Thief in the Night by John Cornwell). ADM (talk) 10:51, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Pius XII's doctor

I don't believe Pius XII was murdered, and officially there is no evidence to back this, but the article should maybe look into allegations that Pius's doctor, Riccardo Galeazzi-Lisi, might have been involved in foul play which could have (involuntarily or not) precipitated the Pope's final illness. I've removed the following

All the cited website has to say on his death is

Being rumoured to have been killed during adulterous acts is not the same as "Murdered by cuckolded husband" not when the man has made enemies of Otto I and Leo VIII

List of murdered Popes → List of murdered popes — Per WP style guidelines "popes" should not be capitalized since it is not a title. Even "pope" should only be capitalized when it is followed by a person's name. The proposed page already exists so we'll need administrative help to perform the move. Removed Peter

I removed Peter from the list of murdered Popes because he wasn't a Pope, in fact he wasn't even a Catholic. In fact, most of the people on the list were not Popes and should be removed, being Bishop of Rome before 7th century didn't qualify you as the Pope

Martyrdom, not Murder

Martyrdom was legal execution, and therefore not murder. The title of the page is very misleading. Chris Weimer (talk) 03:04, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

The new name is not any better. "Died violently" and "murdered" are two different scopes that overlap. Falling down stairs is arguably violent. Being poisoned is arguably not. So what is it going to be? Elizium23 (talk) 03:59, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Pope Lucius II

Comments and question

1. Pope Lucius II is mentioned in the introduction but does not show in any list.

2. If Saint Peter should be added to this list then it should be called "Pope Saint Peter".

3. The format "235-12-21" is useful but I think "21 Dec 235" is better. Many entries follow the YMD format and should be modified.

4. Pope Caius is described as having been "martyred 296-4-22 but not at hands of his uncle Diocletian". The sentence does not make much sense to me. It seems to imply Diocletian may have not killed him personally. This should be clarified and the sentence should be revised.

5. Pope Pope Martin I is under the list of martyrs. I took a look at his own entry and I do not see a specific indication about how he died. I can only presume he died in captivity. Does that qualify for martyrdom?

These dates look horrible in this format, we should definitely change them. Also there are several popes where it gives the dates they were elected but not the dates they were martyred, which is an odd omission from a list of martyrs. Richard75 (talk) 22:36, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Unsure about many of the examples here

When you look at the actual pages of some of the popes listed, many say "it is unknown if he was killed or if he died of natural causes. The only source seems to be a list of popes published by the Vatican: hardly an unbiased source and I would be very hesitant to use them without qualification for matters related to the early history of the church.
