English Channel[edit]

An IP editor contends the English Channel is not a sea, and therefore people buried in the English Channel cannot be included in this page. The editor has twice removed such people from the list - here and more aggressively here.

The IP's argument, per the edit summary, is the English Channel is not an ocean. However this conflicts with:

  • The dictionary definition of "sea" as "a) : a great body of salt water that covers much of the earth and b) a body of salt water of second rank more or less landlocked (eg. the Mediterranean sea)";
  • The definition of "sea" in this marine textbook as "a body of salt water that is smaller than an ocean and more or less land-locked."; and
  • Our own article on the English Channel, which refers to this body of water as "an arm of the Atlantic Ocean" and notes alternate names such as "British Sea" and Ptolemy's "Oceanus Brittanicus"

I suggest that as dictionaries and marine textbooks both define "sea" in a way that includes the English Channel, this article can reasonably include those buried int he English Channel as people who have been buried at sea. Other views are welcome as always - talking here is the alternative to what might otherwise descend into a series of additions and reverts. Euryalus (talk) 01:52, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

3O Response: Hi, I'm here to provide a third opinion... although there seems to be only one represented on this talk page. Would the IP editor like to discuss this matter? My first impression is to agree with Euryalus, although I am only going from my own understanding of the phrase "buried at sea". There's been no action on this issue for ~9 days, and given the nature of the edits (sky is blue, grass is green, EC is sea) and the rather one-sided communication (tremendously unlikely that the IP editor ever explains this satisfactorily), I unilaterally decided it was better to revert the changes and proceed from there. — chro • man • cer  14:06, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
