Talk:List of defunct NBA teams

"Defunct" doesn't mean the same thing as "moved".

Someone rushed to place the SuperSonics on the list, but even if the Oklahoma City team doesn't get Seattle's franchise rights, the franchise will continue to exist, until either the rights run out, or Seattle gets another team. "Defunct" means that the franchise is officially discontinued.

I agree with the above, but I imagine this will continue to be confusing for many readers. For example, the first line of the Supersonics article reads "The Seattle SuperSonics ... were an American professional basketball team ..." I'm aware that there are many teams that have been relocated and kept the same team name, but off the top of my head I don't know how many have been flat out renamed (Bullets > Wizards is at least one I can think of). Assuming there are a handful, it seems like a viable solution would be to create a page similiar to this one entitled something along the lines of "List of renamed NBA teams" -- or even "List of relocated NBA teams." Perhaps I'll do it if I get some free time.

There are several examples of NBA franchises that have changed their names following a move. Examples include the Syracuse Nationals, Chicago Zephyrs, Cincinnati Royals, and Buffalo Braves. The entry refers to the original Nuggets franchise that existed for one season in the NBA (1949-50). It is not affiliated with the current franchise, and merely shares the same name (the source of your confusion). See Denver Nuggets (original). — Myasuda (talk) 14:45, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Merger proposal with List of relocated National Basketball Association teams

I propose that List of defunct National Basketball Association teams be merged with List of relocated National Basketball Association teams into List of defunct and relocated National Basketball Association teams. I think that the content in both articles can cover the topics sufficiently. The reason for this proposal is to create an article for the National Basketball Association that is similar to (but not the same as) List of defunct and relocated National Hockey League teams. I am also proposing the template for Template:NBAdefunct be appropriately changed to the template name that is consistent with the new article name. I'd be opposed to this merger. There's no strong reason I can see to combine two distinct types of franchises together. In fact, these two classes of franchises are setwise disjoint — none of the defunct teams of the NBA ever relocated. The defunct organizations of the NBA all belong to the early history of the league, back when the market was small and all went defunct prior to the introduction of the 24-second clock. Furthermore, the defunct teams represent financial failures whereas relocated franchises were in a number of cases (though not always) fiscally viable organizations with owners seeking larger markets or with motivations other than financial survival. These two classes of franchises have a natural separation, and consolidating them would create a nonhomogenous and thus more confusing mix. — Myasuda (talk) 15:03, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
