Is this article merely for houses which still exist, or can/should ones which have been demolished be included as well? I'm thinking, for instance, of houses like Hamilton Palace and Northumberland House that have their own articles. john k (talk) 14:34, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Historic houses?[edit]

What was the reason for moving the title from ...country houses... to ...historic houses...? If the major qualifying feature for appearance in the list is the existence (past or present) of a substantial garden or park, then I'd vote for moving the title back and tightening up the definition: there are lots of "historic houses", "stately homes and mansions" and "anything of historical architectural note which was used as a residence by a noble family or persons of esteem in history" in various towns and cities, but how many of them ever had substantial gardens?

Having got that off my chest, I have a couple of books devoted to country houses proper: Mark Girouard's The Victorian Country House and Clive Aslet's The Last Country Houses, from which I can probably hoover up some houses not already on the list. --GuillaumeTell 17:05, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well its country houses mainly. But there are houses in urban areas which would qualify and are quite distinct from town houses. And I think some houses that originated as country houses have been absorbed by urban development. Strictly, I suppose, a country house is where the wealthy went when the town/city season was over. I've downloaded the England entries to a spreadsheet and sorted them alphabetically prior to working my way through Girouard's alphabetical list - 2097 country houses! For now, I'm just wondering why #s 10, 11 and 12 Downing Street, 2 Willow Road and 6 Ellerdale Road count as country houses (as against town houses)? --GuillaumeTell 00:39, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This "problem" has been caused by the change from "country" to "historic". The way I read "anything of historical architectural note which was used as a residence by a noble family or persons of esteem in history" would include Downing Street etc. Does it not? Essentially, that is what I was complaining about above - the criteria seem to have been extended to the extent that just about any non-ecclesiastical historic building could be included. Scanning the list, I find the Old Vicarage, Grantchester, The Falcon, Chester (sorry, Peter!), Old Codgers Cottage, Ye Olde Cinder House, Loughwood Meeting House, Totnes Guildhall, Thomas Hardy's Cottage, Anne of Cleves House, Dr. Johnson's House, etc., etc. I'd much prefer the original more carefully defined list which specifies that a) the house is large, b) it is or was located in the countryside and c) it has or had extensive gardens. You've missed a trick by limiting this page to such narrow criteria. Historic houses was much better from a casual viewer's opinion. I for example hit the page looking for historic houses and ruins. This page leaves out of its criteria the many great castles around the UK that were, in effect stately homes of their time. After all, the most popular book of the pre internet age was the UK guide to historic houses and castles, not country houses. just a thought Captainbeecher (talk) 10:47, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
