Same Rules as Best-selling Artists or Albums?

Shouldn't you have the same rules as you have in the Best Selling Artists section? By that I mean claims have to be backed up by a certain % of certifications, depending on when released. "White Christmas", "Yes, Sir, I Can Boogie" and "Fernando" for example do not have enough certifications to justify such reported claims. (Coachtripfan (talk) 16:29, 17 April 2013 (UTC))

In the Best Selling Albums section you have this rule: "All albums included on this list have their available claimed figure(s) supported by at least 20% in certified copies. The percentage amount of certified sales needed increases the newer the album is, so albums released before 1975 are only expected to have their claimed figures supported by at least 20% in certified copies. However, newer albums, such as 21 and Come Away with Me, are expected to have their claimed figures supported by at least 70% in certified copies. Certified copies are sourced from available online databases of local music industry associations." A similar rule should apply for singles.(Coachtripfan (talk) 16:34, 17 April 2013 (UTC))

I actually wrote that rule for the best-selling albums list, basing it on the one on the best-selling artists list.

However, we can't implement a similar rule here because at least before the late 1970's, there were not enough countries awarding certifications to provide a good general estimate of a single's sales. Furthermore, while albums sometimes receive certifications from new record industry associations that were founded after a particular album is released, this rarely happens with singles. (Compare the creation/foundation dates of different industry associations with the countries where Thriller was certified

Maybe not exactly the same rules as for artists/albums but surely some rules? By the 1970s most of the major markets had certifications for singles and I can't see how you can possibly get 18m for Yes, sir, I Can Boogie, for example. (Coachtripfan (talk) 16:42, 23 April 2013 (UTC))

Add will.i.am to the "best selling" section

will.i.am according to this list alone has sold more than the cumulative sales of the artists listed "The artists who have released the most singles that appear on this list are Elvis Presley and Katy Perry with six entries each, and Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Flo Rida, and Britney Spears, with five each. The cumulative sales for each are 40 million, ~42 million, ~48 million, ~37 million, 36 million and 34 million, respectively."

With this list alone (not counting his other massive singles that haven't yet reached 5 Mill like Scream and Shout, Imma Be, Rock That Body), Will totals 47.5 million sales.

I searched for Rihanna's singles' sales in recent weeks, but I have found that only S&M has sold more than 5 million copies (and I have already listed links to prove it). About the other singles you mentioned, I have found these worldwide sales by adding certified sales of many countries:

You're right; "Roar" has sold 3.6 million. [1] That's not the 5 million needed to appear on this list though. Even if the United World Chart were reliable, it only gives points, not total sales, so I don't know how it could help. Adabow (talk) 19:06, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Done: Added the song to the list. There are other countries in the world where this song was released and sold. Just check its certifications.

Also, I can assure you, it didn't sell 350k for 10 consecutive weeks (at least not in an individual country). "Royals" topped the US Top Digital Songs at least four times after "Roar" was released.

If you're referring to mediatraffic points, they are based on sales and AIRPLAY. Also, the methodology used is unclear, unexplained and therefore unverifiable. I move we combine the physical and digital sales numbers. I've read the explanation given for why they're separated, but I don't see the relevance of it. Who cares whether they're digital or physical sales? Who, googling onto bestselling singles of all time, wants to exclude one or the other? i just wonder how come several songs have sales listed on the table then when you look at the sources it mentions different sales record. also why do some songs with neither definitive nor inclusive sales doesnt have their updated sales records posted.

The list already counts ringtones in the sales of "Low", "Lollipop", "Irreplaceable" and other songs.

The second link cited for the Mandopop songs is indeed a forum source, but we are not citing that precise website, but its translation of the previous link, which is a press release/article written entirely in Chinese and which lists the same sales figures as the translated version.

If an argument is presented as to why we shouldn't include ringbacks (a likely source of the Mandopop singles' massive sales) when the list already counts ringtones, and it reaches consensus, they shall be removed.

Concerning changes in song genres, I personally have only changed the genre of "Hips Don't Lie", as I believe it does not have enough of a brass section or enough of a "tropical" sound in its instrumentation to really be considered salsa music.  This is ABBA's biggest selling Single. Yet you do not have it Listed. You do List 'Waterloo' & 'Fernando', which it outsold.

Towards the close of 1976 'Dancing Queen' was on over 3 Million Sales. But, in 1977 it went on to sell around 1,500,000 in the USA - reaching No.1 there in April 1977. It also sold several 100,000 in Canada, in 1977. As well as still being in many European Charts, well into 1977. It sold around 5,500,000 in the 1970's. Then around 500,000 as a Re-Issue in 1992. And in more recent Years it has sold at least 1 Million as a Download. That's ABBA - Dancing Queen (USA Downloads) 597,000 (Reported in Billboard on 23/01/2009), 100,000+ in the UK, & 100,000+ in Japan. As you can see, its Downloads from just 3 Countries are over 800,000. It means that they must be well over a Million Globally, as ABBA are popular, (still), in many Countries - Germany, Sweden, Australia, Canada etc, etc. This means that 'Dancing Queen' must have a minimum of 7 Million Global Sales by now. Sales and Streaming

I see that streamed songs are in some cases already counted as part of the total sales (for example all the singles in the last ifpi report, "dark horse" and "we are never ever getting back together"). I do not like a lot the idea of considering streaming, but I also think that we have no choice, since the ifpi, the riaa and the bpi already use them. Adding streaming data would also mean that other songs would have sold more than 5m copies and that others would have higher total sales (just three examples: "party in the usa" has been certified 7 times platinum by the riaa, "bad romance" diamond and "super bass" 8 times platinum).

Personally, I would prefer to keep them separate whenever possible and not include streaming unless inevitable (IFPI reports).

DANCING QUEEN - ABBA

 The List is flawed in that it does not include ABBA's Best Selling Single - 'Dancing Queen'.

That sold over 6 Million physical copies, without even taking into account over 100,000 Digital Sales in the UK, & over 600,000 in the USA, as well as its Digital Sales elsewhere. There is a mistaken view that 'Dancing Queen' sold 3 Million copies Globally. This is because Joseph Murrells said so in a September 1984 Million Sellers Book. He was going by what Polar Music said towards the end of 1976. That it was on 3 Million Sales to that point. But, it was still in many of the World's Charts well into 1977, & those Sales have to be added in. As well as the fact that it did not become a USA & Canadian No.1 until well into 1977. It sold well over a Million in the USA alone in 1977, & those Sales have to be added in. It also sold around 300,000 Globally, (on CD), as a Re-Issue in 1992, & those Sales have to be added in. Hence why it sold far more than the 3 Million that it had towards the end of 1976. It is widely said to be ABBA's biggest Global Hit, & any Global Best Selling Singles List that fails to include it is seriously flawed. Especially when it credits 'Yes Sir I Can Boogie', by Baccara, with 16 Million Sales. That 1977 Single had sold 3 Million in Europe, when it became a UK No.1. It sold around 700,000 in the UK, & it can't possibly have sold more than 5 to 5.5 Million Globally, as can be seen by its subsequent Charts positions outside of the UK & Europe. It was not even a Hit in the USA or Canada. There is no way that it sold 16 Million Globally. It would have had to sell about 10 Million in the USA to manage that! But, it carries on being said to have sold 16 Million Globally. And 'Dancing Queen' is not even Listed. I'd really like to donate to Wikipedia, but I cannot do so, when I see nonsense in so many of its Lists. I cannot support flawed reasoning. (in)appropriateness of mentioning the most-listed artists on this list

I thought I'd describe more fully why I believe it's very inappropriate to include the run-down, currently in the second paragraph of the article, of the most-listed artists on this particular list of singles that have sold 5 million or more.

First, examples of similar lists of achievements that I believe are wholly appropriate for Wikipedia can be found at list of Billboard Hot 100 chart achievements and milestones. On the surface, the difference between a list from that page (such as the list of artists with the most top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100) and the paragraph in question from this article might seem slight or nonexistent, as they simply list artists who have achieved a certain feat (a top 10 Hot 100 single, a 5-million-selling single) multiple times with the number of times that they've achieved it. But there are important distinctions that, I would argue, make the former (Hot 100) list useful and the latter (this article's second paragraph) virtually useless and highly misleading.

When Billboard decides to answer the question "Which ten artists have had the most Hot 100 top ten hits?" so they can publish the answer in a Year-End feature or Chart Beat column, they have all the raw data at their disposal to answer the question: namely, every Hot 100 chart that they have ever published. Even more importantly, they systematically comb through ALL of that data to arrive at their answer. This ensures that the list that comes out of this inquiry is complete, true, and free of bias.

The method by which the information in this article is compiled is not systematic in this manner. It is compiled, gradually and very slowly, by a plethora of editors all of whom who have radically different interests in artists and songs and almost none of whom are primarily interested in fully investigating the question of which artists have the most 5-million-selling singles. The process, of finding citations for sales figures as they become available and adding them up with putative sales/shipment figures based on certifications, is far from systematic. Worse still, no one editing this article (or perhaps at all) has access to all the data (sales figures especially) that would make this list of most artists with 5-million-selling singles meaningful. There simply is no way to collect reliable sales information for all highly successful singles; SoundScan, Official Charts Company, and IFPI sales figures are only released sporadically for a small subset of successful songs, and songs frequently go un- or under-certified. This is why the article CORRECTLY states that the list is incomplete and may forever remain incomplete. What the article does provide, therefore, is a good repository of sales information proving that some subset of singles having sold 5 million or more has indeed sold that much. That's it. It's not comprehensive, and, short of IFPI or Nielsen or Billboard doing a comprehensive review of their own, it never will be. The second paragraph's list of "artists with the most singles (including featured credits) on this list", therefore, is rather meaningless, as this list is not noteworthy in itself; it represents an admittedly dramatically (perhaps inevitably) incomplete subset of all the singles that have sold 5 million or more. Among other things, the list will therefore naturally be biased in favor of those artists with the most Wikipedians interested in updating their sales figures on Wikipedia and those who most often have their sales figures noted by Billboard and other trade sources.

Put another way: a list of artists with the most top ten Hot 100 hits compiled in a piecemeal, non-systematic way by a plethora of Wikipedians slowly synthesizing a small subset of all the relevant Hot 100 charts would likely be fraught with significant error; the list that would result from such a process would be very unlikely to perfectly match the true list. Fortunately, though, the list on the Hot 100 achievements article is sourced by Billboard's answer to the question, which was determined by a systematic approach. No analogous sources or inquiries yet exist answering the question of which artists have the most 5-million-selling singles, especially in the digital age.

I hope that is enough to explain it. If, however, the other editors here remain unconvinced and would wish to leave that paragraph up, I hope I will at least convince you to rewrite it a bit. Dispute regarding List of best-selling singles and the term "best-selling singles of all-time"

A user is disputing the use of the term "one of the best-selling singles of all-time" on Talk:Meghan Trainor, a term used widely among GA-class song articles as well, such as Poker Face (Lady Gaga song), ...Baby One More Time, Bad Romance, Just the Way You Are (Bruno Mars song), Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) among many others. The user feels that it is WP:OR and WP:PEACOCK to use the term without a source that directly refers to the song as "one of the best-selling singles of all-time" irregardless of if it features on the List of best-selling singles or not. The editor he's referring to is me. Lips and another editor, User:MaranoFan insist on keeping the phrase "one of the best selling singles of all time" in articles relating to Meghan Trainor and the song All About That Bass. The phrase is used by no reliable source that I can find. Using it solely because the song has done well and is on a list somewhere does not make it officially one of the best selling singles of all time. Sales from all versions are not combined for this list. Individual versions that have sold over 5 million can be added to the list.

This is why "White Christmas" only has 50 million (all versions are over 150 million) and why "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" only has 12 million (all versions are over 150 million). Here I report that in the last period, I have attempted to place singles also of not English-language, which have sold millions of copies worldwide, related sources , that someone considered unreliable . Specifically , I refer to songs from Italian international repertoire , who have the most reliable sources for national newspapers and tvs of Italy . However, my work was removed , and the page looks like a celebration of American music , just truthful . I had already read this, and sources supporting informations (mainly the major national newspapers) do not seem to disagree with these guidelines. Also absurd that in Febrary 2015, one of these songs has been awarded for the copies sold on Eurovision live TV (Sanremo Music Festival Awrds 2015), and here is denied. Streams

An 'equivalent track stream' is not a sale. It is a methodology for compiling a chart just like airplay. That being said, if the main sources of sales information such as the RIAA are bundling them together then we can only report what is out there. They are more distinct from digital download sales than physical sales and therefore should be listed separately. Also the OCC in the UK still separate out download sales for some purposes and these figures are given in the individual song certification box where available so all the 'includes streaming' figures need checking. I don't think that Wabash Cannonball by Roy Acuff should be listed as selling 10 Million copies as I think this is the total figure for the 1936 recording and the 1947 one. Digital era table

There is a bit of work to do on this table to improve it. Rather than exact sales like 13.8 M, I think this should show ranges where several sources are available. There is no definitive global figure due to variations in accuracy of measuring sales in different regions. This problem is compounded by the fact that many sources in the popular press will just make a bald statement like "sold almost 15 million copies worldwide" without any qualification at all (is this downloads or downloads and stream equivalents? is it just a record company estimate or calculated more precisely? what is the possible error margin: 14-16M or 10-20M?)

The WMA stated last week that the 1,2,3 of the 21st century are Happy, I Gotta Feeling, Uptown Funk, with UF about to overtake IGF. This is by no means definitive, but in the absence of any other recent source stating that there is a different 1,2,3 then I think the table should reflect this regardless of what sales figures different sources give (Call Me Maybe is given 18M in The Telegraph but it doesn't say it's the best selling song). I added this song, which has 15+ million sales and 18 million according to "The Book of Golden Discs" by Joseph Murrells, and it was reverted by Synthwave.94 with the reason "not what the source says." Has Synthwave.94 read the book, or the Wikipedia page on the song in question, or the many other cites for similar figures?

"(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" conflicting numbers in several reliable sources

The song "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" performed by Bryan Adams (the song is the current record holder in the UK charts for the longest consecutive weeks at No. 1, and listed as the No. 1 song of the year in 1991 by Billboard) is currently listed in this article as 8 million copies sold. The source cited in this article gives that number (though the source could be read as meaning units sold in the week of its release, as some other sources explicitly state, which could makes sense since it went to #1 in 16 different countries shortly after its release). The Wiki page for the song says over 15 million copies were sold worldwide, which cites a New York Times article (NYT from 1994). Several articles I have found from "reliable sources" (such as the New York Times and BBC) have conflicting numbers (some wildly conflicting) which makes me wonder just how reliable they really are. Is there a definitive source that can settle exactly how many copies were sold? No, there isn't a definitive source for global sales and figures quoted in sources are very variable and open to different interpretation. Record companies may claim a sales figure based on how many copies they ship out, but they don't all sell. This page should give a range based on different sources which would indicate the degree of uncertainty. It also shouldn't split physical and digital sales because many sources don't do this so the split is unknown. Personally, I don't find it particularly encyclopedic or informative. DANCING QUEEN - ABBA

Dancing Queen is widely acknowledged to be ABBA's Best Selling Single. It sold over 6 Million Globally, between 1976 & 1977, with further Sales added in from the 1992 Re-Issue. It has also sold over 700,000 in USA Downloads & 193,000 in UK Downloads. That is not even counting its Downloads from other Countries. So, it has sold over 6 Million Vinyl & CD copies, & well over 7 Million with Downloads added in. Yet, your List does not include it. Also - Fernando did not sell 10 Million copies. It sold 6 Million, which is why Dancing Queen has outsold it. So, until you add Dancing Queen to your List, your List is deeply flawed. www.mediatraffic.de "points" - convert to sales?

Does anyone know how www.mediatraffic.de "points" are derived? Is every sale a point and every point a sale, or is there some other methodology used? Are streaming "sales" counted the same way that the regular charts like Billboard count sales?

I am concerned because Josepheugene418 added this link in this recent edit (I've corrected the sales number down to 9.3m, I assume 9.7m was a typo, the reference says 9,325,000 points).
