What is the criteria for inclusion of a stock in the "Significant Minority Holdings Section"?[edit]

What is the criteria for inclusion of a stock in the "Significant Minority Holdings Section"?

It's not clear.

  • Is it % holding of the company (in which case quite a few of the stocks lower down should be included--since the lowest value in the table is 4%)
  • Is it total current value of the holding (% holding multiplied by share price)--again some but fewer probably should be included in the table: Coca-Cola, Tesco to name two.

what about the past?[edit]

Why doesn't it list what they previously owned, how much, when, and when they sold it? Buffet was once on the board of directors for Apple computers in the old days. Dream Focus 14:49, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete List of Operating Companies[edit]

The listing given on this page is apparently drawn mainly from the link to a page on the Berkshire Hathaway website, http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/subs/sublinks.html

That page is inconsistent with the list of operating companies given in each of Berkshire Hathaway's Annual Statements (links here: http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/reports.html). Since the annual reports are audited and the general website is not, the annual reports should be considered more authoritative. The reports are available in various xml type formats, someone better than me should be able to readout the data fairly easily. — Preceding unsigned comment added by InsuredProf (talkcontribs) 21:00, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The list of companies that Berkshire partially owns should include a recent investment in Synchrony Financial. Symbol SYF.

"Significant minority holdings" section isn't being maintained[edit]

It appears that the "Significant minority holdings" section of this article isn't being maintained. Among the problems with it:

  • Some of the incorrect information is very major, e.g., it says that Berkshire Hathaway owns 8% of IBM, but this was sold a year ago.
  • All the citations are to https://www.cnbc.com/berkshire-hathaway-portfolio/, but they're a one-time snapshot, and the citation doesn't even tell the date it was retrieved.
  • The table misleadingly has very precise (but not accurate) numeric information.

Since it seems unlikely that anyone will maintain this (and it isn't even clear that it can be done, since the numbers change daily), I think the table should be removed and replaced by a link to the CNBC site. Dan Bloch (talk) 23:22, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've made the above change. Dan Bloch (talk) 17:50, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Danbloch I updated all the numbers and holdings. I will do this from time to time. I am, or was, surprised to see 3-4 year old information. But please don't remove a major section that is worthy to be on Wikipedia just because there has been a lack of updating. You could've updated it or someone else could have. The dates for the information by CNBC would be Berkshire's 13-F, dated February 14, 2019. That is the date. The only numbers that would be changing on a consistent-to-constant basis would be the Ownership as companies buy and/or issue shares all the time. But that is redundant to do so on a constant basis to update the numbers. Only update Ownership numbers when reported by Berkshire. Aviartm (talk) 06:58, 10 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Applied Underwriters is being sold[edit]

I don't know the protocol. Should Applied Underwriters be deleted from the list? Or should it be kept in the list, with a note that it was sold? https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2019/02/27/518837.htm "In a rare move, Berkshire Hathaway is selling one of its companies, leading workers’ compensation specialist Applied Underwriters, in order to avoid conflict with its other workers’ compensation businesses." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Not logged in 2 (talkcontribs) 01:11, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't "Value" be renamed "Purchase Price"?[edit]

It's more accurate to say purchase price. It's not really accurate to value a business at what Berkshire bought it for several years ago, merely adjusted for inflation. Let's call it what it is: the purchase price. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Not logged in 2 (talkcontribs) 01:38, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, changed it to "Acquisition Price"... hopefully that's okay. Not logged in 2 (talk) 01:52, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dairy Queen 99%[edit]

Why is Dairy Queen only 99% owned by Berkshire Hathaway? The sources listed on the table seem to indicate they own 100% of the company. EggMilkSoup (talk) 01:31, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
