State symbols[edit]

Is there any particular reason why we show the 2-letter symbols for the US State the Ambassador was from? They weren't just representing their state, after all, but the United States as a whole. I'd like to remove them unless I hear a good argument for keeping them. -- JackofOz (talk) 01:50, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No explanation why it is relevant or objection to removal in the eight years since it was raised so I have removed the state column. MilborneOne (talk) 16:04, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't object to removing them, but they may have been included because in the record of a Senate confirmation of an Ambassador or Cabinet secretary the nominee's state is usually given, e.g. "On the nomination of John Doe of South Carolina to be United States Ambassador to _____". Court of St. James's[edit]

I would like to know the rationale behind using 'Court of St. James's' throughout this article. I have seen the term in many different sources and it has always been 'Court of St. James.' Only recently have I started seeing 'St. James's' become the standard and to be honest, it looks funky with the double S. --Sephiroth9611 (talk) 16:17, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Peacock term[edit]

van Buren?[edit]

Was Martin van Buren really "Minister to Court of St. James"? I thought that he was appointed by the president, but that this appointment was rejected by the senate. Shouldn't we at least add a footnote? --Austrian (talk) 09:34, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Date of appointment[edit]

What is the 'date of an appointment' of a US ambassador. This is significant for Woody Johnson, the current ambassador.

  • January 19, 2017, President-elect Donald Trump announced that he planned to nominate Johnson
  • June 22, 2017, President Trump formally nominated Johnson
  • June 26, 2017, nomination referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations
  • July 20, 2017, nomination hearing by Senate Committee on Foreign Relations
  • August 3, 2017, Johnson confirmed by the US senate
  • August 21, 2017, Johnson sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence
  • August 29, 2017, Johnson presents his credentials to the British Government

Most of the dates are sourced in Woody Johnson. We currently give January 19, 2017, which looks wrong. It is sourced to a Russia Today report, which is a questionable source. In my view the "date of appointment" should either be the senate confirmation or the swearing-in. Verbcatcher (talk) 15:52, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No legend[edit]

ATROBO (At the risk of being . . .), there seems to be no legend identifying the colors in the column comprising regions of same.

1) Fix.

2) Propagate the fix across all lists of U.S. ambassadors.

3) Make all lists consistent. Some do not have this helpful column. Add.
