Merge[edit]

I think we could merge in the Philadelphia Phillies season records table underneath the abstract in this article, move over the picture and description from the other page, and have a really good looking article here. Killervogel5 (talk) 18:17, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds fine to me. This title is also more consistent with other teams (exceptions: Braves, A's, Twins) per "Category:Major League Baseball teams seasons" so I think it is better to merge here. Mitico (talk) 18:57, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done, as of now. Killervogel5 (talk) 20:23, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

The changes that continue to be made are trying to gloss over fact by making it seem more positive. The fact remains that the Phillies were largely unsuccessful for a long period of time. The language that was used isn't appropriate because it's not neutral. Comments and questions welcome. KV5Squawk boxFight on! 18:44, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe your revert is unfounded. Thirty-four years of playing over .507 counts for something. The overall negative tone is in stark contrast to the team's past 34 years of relative success. The team is 125 years old; yes, for the first 91 years, the team's record was awful, no question. But 34 years is longer than many MLB teams have even been in existence -- and during that period, the record is better than average -- hardly abysmal as the prior version described. So my edits properly added a balance. With my edits the article still reflected all the futility, including the 10,000+ losses, but emphasizes that the most recent results are quite positive, despite the overall reputation of the team. Phillie fans have long memories, but the math doesn't match the intensity of the negative tone of the article. --Itsgeneb (talk) 19:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Respectfully, in addition, the vast majority of the edits were simply for readability, moving the negative comments into the 2nd paragraph, and the positives into the third paragraph -- where they mixed between the two before that point. A primary "tone" edit was to correct a factual error: the older version had said that 111 losses was "just shy" of the MLB live-ball era record of 120 -- an obvious error. Thus I have reverted my edits.--Itsgeneb (talk) 19:33, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mixing the negative and positive comments was done intentionally, to temper the article and make it not read as a comparative statement. It is not meant to say "This team was really bad here," then "This team was really good here." The article was ordered as such for a reason, and passed through a vigorous review process to get where it is today. Certainly the article has room to evolve, but discussion should be had before such sweeping edits are made to any featured content on Wikipedia. I would have been happy to discuss your edits with you beforehand or during, or to help with them. That's why I've listed my name as being actively involved with this page. Per the featured list criteria and a host of MOS guidelines, as well as Wikipedia policies galore, I've taken what I consider to be some of the best parts of your edits (they were quite well-written) and re-combined them with the original information in the format that was used as the list passed FL. Hopefully this meets with both our approvals. A few things were changed: some minor grammatical errors, and removal of the second mention of the World Series per WP policies on redundancy in featured content. Eddie Sawyer and Gene Mauch won Manager of the Year with the Phillies?[edit]

I removed text stating that Eddie Sawyer and Gene Mauch (2X) had won Manager of the Year in 1950, 1962 and 1964 respectively. The RS cited on MLB.com contradicted that claim and noted that the Baseball Writer Association only started giving the award since 1983. There is also the separate Sporting News Manager of the Year award, but neither of these men ever won that award. Was there another MOY award before 1983 that they might have won?Doctor Franklin (talk) 00:25, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so I found a citation that Sawyer won the AP poll as MOY in 1950, and a citation listing the AP MOY from 1959 to 1983 when it was replaced with the Baseball Writer Association MOY in 1983: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/awards/aw_mgy2.shtmlDoctor Franklin (talk) 02:05, 21 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
