Article needs overhaul[edit]

This article a complete overhaul to make it encyclopedic. Subjective statements need to be removed and all information should be clearly referenced with footnotes. I'm not even sure a list of the songs is the best format for the article. Moisejp (talk) 16:18, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of Basement Tapes songs[edit]

I've rewritten this article so that it becomes a separate article - a comprehensive list of tracks recorded. I figured this would be useful complement to The Basement Tapes article. Please post comments here: [[1]] Mick gold (talk) 09:20, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Possible misidentification of which version of Tears of Rage was on the 14-song acetate[edit]

I believe the following material in the article has the "Acetate" attribution wrong:

  • "Tears of Rage – Take 1"(3:58) (Bob Dylan/Richard Manuel): first take of one of the most famous Basement Tapes songs. The song has gone on to be one of the most covered tunes from the basement sessions. The Band recorded their own version, which appeared as the opening track of their first album Music From Big Pink.
  • "Tears of Rage – Take 2" (2:28): This take breaks down halfway through.
  • "Tears of Rage – Take 3" (4:14) (Acetate): This take was released on the 1975 album.

It's difficult to sort out because of conflicting approaches to take numbering, but the web page http://www.punkhart.com/dylan/disco/basement-kokay.html correlates the Tears of Rage versions to differences in Verse 2, line 7:

  • T1 I myself, I really thought (inc; 2 verses only, 'waltzy')
  • T2 I myself really thought
  • T3 I myself remember now (Gtr intro)

Independent of numbering, the upshot of what that page asserts is that the third (T3 above) appeared on the 14-song acetate, and the second (T2) appeared on the 1975 album. Certainly it was T3 that appeared on the Great White Wonder 2-LP. Attackin' My Broom?[edit]

I'm puzzled by inclusion of this song on list. It is not on my copy of Tree With Roots. It is not mentioned by Marcus or by Sid Griffin. Has anybody heard it? Is there any evidence it exists? Mick gold (talk) 07:37, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Now I've heard it, it's a fragment 20 secs long before Take 1 of "The Spanish Song". I would argue it's a fragment rather than a song, and delete it. Anyone agree/disagree? Mick gold (talk) 13:30, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we should include it without a reference. I personally have never seen any mention of that title anywhere else--even if it does exist as a fragment, how can we know that's its title?--so unless anyone can produce such a citation from a reliable source, I say we delete it. I went ahead and deleted it. Moisejp (talk) 05:39, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Mick gold (talk) 16:53, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
