Inaccurate summary?[edit]

The plot summary may relate to the American version but is considerably adrift of the original French film. I suggest it is altered as follows:

A village in the Jura bridges the river Loue, which forms the line of demarcation between German-occupied France and Vichy France. The story opens on the bridge with Pierre, a wounded French army officer who has been released from prisoner of war camp and feels defeated. His château has become the headquarters of the honest Major von Pritsch and he accepts German rule. His English wife Mary has however joined the Resistance and helps downed Allied airmen escape over the river. After tending a wounded agent, who has parachuted in from England, she is taken prisoner by the Gestapo. Pierre recovers his courage and his patriotism, taking his revenge on the bridge.
