"experimental novel" classification[edit]

The NY Times article cited calls the books "George Saunders’s surreal, experimental first novel," which I take to mean experimental in light of Saunders' usual writing as opposed to saying that it fits into the "experimental novel" genre. It's really not an "experimental novel" as far as the article that "experimental novel" links to describes "experimental novels." Someone could find a second source that uses the same term or change the line.
